There are about 4500 shops, 6 department stores and 2 huge shopping malls in downtown Trieste.
The Borgo Teresiano - the grid-pattern, neo-classical city center named after Empress Maria Theresa - is where Trieste's uninspiring shopping opportunities are concentrated. In the Old Town forget about shoes and clothes and concentrate on coffee and second-hand books - two commodities which the city specializes. One which is so famous as to feature on the city council tourist trail is the Libreria Antiquaria Umberto Saba in Via San Nicolas 30. Set up by the city's most famous poet in 1919, it still retains the musty, order-through-chaos atmosphere of a true bibliophile's den. James Joyce lived with wife Nora and two kids in a flat above, though he and Saba never met.
Even if you haven't got the espresso machine with you, a bag of freshly-ground coffee is a great traveling companion; try the CremCaffè, an old-fashioned torrefazione (coffee roaster) on Piazza Goldoni, where you can also pick up a set of limited edition Illy coffee cups (the design changes every year). The old town, between Piazza Unità d'Italia and the hill of San Giusto, is dotted with second-hand bookshops.
During the year, there are numerous Markets and Fairs in the city. On the third Sunday of every month, the cities love for antiques reflected in the coming together of over 60 or so antique shops, jewelers and second-hand dealers offering Art Nouveau and Secession objects and furniture. Take a stroll through the street markets and pick up a few bargains!

Department stores and a lot of shops and boutiques are open 7 days a week generally 9 AM - 20 PM
Shopping Malls open 365 days a year 9 AM- 21 PM

Centro Commerciale "Torri d'Europa": How to go shopping and feel European
  • Tip Rating:

  • Centro Commerciale "Torri d'Europa" ("Towers of Europe") is the largest department store in Trieste. It is located a little outside the city, on the way to Slovenija, but you can also reach it with bus 29 and night bus B. There are 120 shops, a supermarket, several restaurants as well as a cinema. I must not forget to mention the huge car park (1600 places) that lies underground.

There is nothing special to buy here. Actually, all the shops belongs to important chains, so they are not typical of Trieste. By contrast, in the supermarket you can buy some food products that you don't easily find elsewhere.

It depends on the shops where you want to go.

I am regularly visiting Trieste, first of all to buy cheap and fashionable clothes and shoes. The best time for shopping in Trieste is by the end of July and the begining of the January. Most of the shops makes huge sales, so you can buy items for half of the prices. Do not miss that oportunity.

    - ready made garments and shoes

half of the price of the high season

Libreria Borsatti: -15% on all books

  • Libreria Borsatti is one of my favourite bookshops because it has a lot of books but also, and that is the main reason, because they apply a 15% discount on all books. (Well, dictionaries and some other books are not subject to the discount).

You should go there if you wish to buy a guidebook or a history book about Trieste, Istria and anything related to the Austrian Empire, to which Trieste belonged until the end of WWI. Or simply if you want to have a good discount!

Books about Trieste cost from 15 to 30 euro.

Sometimes; also around Easter time, in Piazza della Borsa you can find various stalls.

There you can buy food, handicrafts, old things, plants and other things.

Ohm Records: Listening to the music on the sofà

  • If you are looking for records or CD that are not easy to find in big megastorea, but you would prefer listening to them before buying there is a place really useful, in a narrow road next to Piazza Unità, in "via dei Capitelli 1". The name of the place is Ohm Records and the bell is easy to find because it is covered with orange fur. The shop it's at first floor and you can even sit on the sofà while listening to the music
Genres: Breakbeat, Downbeat, Dub, Electronica, Nujazz
