    Mummies of Venzone

by fipsi Updated Aug 29, 2004

Beneath the Chapel of San Michele (Cappella di San Michele) you find 15 quite famous mummies.

They were already found in 1647 during works in the cathedral.

Venzone lies atop limestone bedrock. Groundwater in such regions is usually alkaline, an environment hostile to putrefaction. During floods, alkaline waters likely seeped through dirt floors in tombs 1 to 10, preserving the cadavers. Vaults 11 to 17 had sealed stone floors. Moreover, floodwaters in tombs 1 to 10 drained quickly through the porous limestone. Coffin wood from those vaults possessed just 7 percent water. In such aridity, water-soaked humans would have dried rapidly into mummies.

  • Walking

The only way to visit the small town is walking around (or riding a bicycle maybe an alternative) - the town is compact, it takes maybe 10-20 min. to walk from one to the other end of it.

    .
During the last week end of October it is held a medieval feast called “Festa della Zucca” dedicated to the “pumpkin”. It is held in the town centre and all the habitants of Venzone do wear medieval dresses. There are medieval shows , the town is illuminated just by torches and lanterns.Local wine is served together with food based on pumpkin products.

Venzone Tourist Traps

  • Parking lots

.Venzone is small (easy to walk from one to another end) but parking a car maybe a problem there. Most streets are narrow with "no parking 0-24h" signs and one direction traffic. . There is not heavy traffic there so you can drive and drive till you find your parking lot - there are a few small squares with parking lots inside the town. Go there...

  • Italian wines

Italian wines (not those the cheapest) are delicious.Remember not to take shots with your camera when you drink a little more cheap Italian wines. Results you can see on my picture hehe. Don't go close to your camera (or your car). Drink a little less, how much? depends on you, take a test before you go abroad better hehe :-)).

  • Old fountain

You can find this old fountain in the main square of Venzone (1878 by Tuti and Fantoni from Gemona). It looks pretty in my opinion. Next time I have to put Euro (maybe Eurocent hehe) into the fountain to be sure to come back there.MORE info on Venzone:www.giubileo.fvg.it/localita/localita.asp?L=2&COM=Venzonewww.itwg.com/en_fri04.asp.

.The fourteenth century Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral (Duomo), built with local stone on the existing remains, consecrated in 1338 by the Patriarch Bertrando, is Latin cross shaped with a vast transept and single nave ending in three apses from the vault. The Baptistry is situated in front of the Dome and contains the mummies that have made Venzone...

  • Lovely squares

Walking around Venzone you can discover a few charming squares, some squares are surronded by many Reinassance palaces of the 15th-16th century, maybe 2 with cafes and restaurants around.BTW I think that Italian coffee (not only capuccino) is the best in Europe - how do they do it?
