The Borromean Islands are a trio of islands located in Lago Maggiore that were at onetime owned by the Borromean family. The islands consist of Isola Bella, Isola Superiore and Isola Madre. On the first two islands are small villages which are saturated with tourists oriented establishments. Both Superiore and Madre have very beautiful palaces and gardens that you can explore for an admission charge. The islands are at least superficially stunning located as they are on this splendid lake with the Italian Alps being an unbeatable backdrop however they are over touristed. To reach the islands you can take a public ferry to each island from Stresa. A daypass to all three islands cost 9 Euros.

When in southern italy you have to visit the Almafi coast......breathtaking views...amazing people....great food and cheap wine! There are lots of cheap Hostels and taking the bus is really cheap! It was 1000 stairs down to the beach though ( the whole coast is built right into the mountains) so be prepared for a work out! My best memory of Italy was going on a midnight boat ride with some people from our hostel adn seeing the coast at night...cant even describe it....phosphorecents in the water.....and then the nice italian men that gave us a daytime cruise of the coast....
If I were limited to taking someone to Italy to one place only, I would take him/her to Gaeta on Gaeta bay between Rome and Naples. My husband Allan and I spent 68 days there and loved every moment of it. It is most important to stay in the ancient Gaeta. We stayed in an apartment that we rented from an advertisement in the "Chicago Tribune". From the windows you could see the bay, the bell tower to the Duomo, and the castle. What a view. On the bottom floor of the apartment building, there was a restaurant and a Cappuccino Bar, which made THE BEST CAPPUCCINOS in all of Italy (and the biggest too). There was a grocery store across the way as well as a newspaper stand, a bakery, a florist, and a meat market. The Duomo in Gaeta as well as several other churches were beautiful. The castle was being renovated, and I would love to go back and see the results. There is an American naval base...

Not far from Milan in the north of Italy, you will find the beautiful Lake Como. If you look at a map, you will see that it is a long lake, but, did you know that it is an extremely deep lake? The southern end of Lake Como forks into two long "legs", and that is where picturesque Bellagio is situated. Bellagio is on the promontory beween the two "legs" of the lake. We stayed there while visiting this region. It's an historic town that has promenades, great hotels, and lovely gardens that are open to the public.Lake Como has been a popular resort area since the days of the Roman Empire. Today, the towns that dot the shores of the lake are still popular as resort areas.Besides Bellagio, you should visit the town named after the lake, Como. It has an appealing historical center and a fantastic location at the southern end of the east brance of Lake Como. Visit the impressive Duomo which has...

You know that you've found San Gimignano when you see the 13 towers that dominate its skyline. These towers were built by noble families who fought each other during the 12th and 13th centuries. At the time, San Gimignano was an important town, but after the plague of the mid 1300's, its economy declined as did its importance. The town remains mostly medieval and filled with great restaurants, lovely shops, and important works of art.The town's oldest tower is probably at Palazzo Vecchio del Podesta (1200's).For shopping, Via San Giovanni is the best for local goods. In my opinion, the best sites to visit are the MUSEO CIVICO with its great art work; a 12th century Romanesque church (COLLEGIATA) with its beautiful frescoes and all the narrow streets and lanes with multiple opportunities for great photographs. It was a holiday when we arrived, and the streets were jam packed with mostly...
