Rome

by traveldave

Rome has had one of the longest and most influential histories of any city in Europe. It probably has had more impact on Western civilization and the world than any other city. Many European languages are derived from Latin, numerous political and legal systems throughout the world are based on the Roman model, and buildings worldwide have architectural styles that were influenced by Rome.Rome was founded about 2,400 years ago, when it was a small Iron Age village of mean huts. In about 616 B.C., the village was overrun by neighboring Etruscans, who were themselves ousted in 509 B.C. At about that time, Rome became a republic. It was not long before the ambitious and militaristic Romans took over most of Italy, and then neighboring regions. By the first century B.C., Rome ruled an empire that stretched from Spain and North Africa to the Middle East. Power-hungry and corrupt rulers led to...

Teatro Mancinelli - Located at Corso Cavour 122

by iandsmith

In addition to theatre, one if its main functions is weddings and special occasions. The entrance of the Theatre Mancinelli is composed by an elegant portico with seven openings and a wonderful hall which is completely adorned with paintings of the XIX century. This is the fascinating setting that welcomes the spouses and guests at the moment of their arrival. Increasingly sought by theatre companies because its functional features, the Mancinelli was reopened to the public in December 1993 after a careful restoration that respected its original beauty.Since then the theatre hosts high level performances planned and managed successfully by the Associazione Te.Ma., in cooperation with the municipality of the city. From year to year the programming proposals have been supported by a large and diverse audience not only from Orvieto but also from different cities of Umbria and central...

Orvieto - worth a look

by iandsmith

Museo Civico Archeologico and the Museo Claudia Faina are housed in the same building adjacent to the fabulous duomo. The name Faina is synonymous because the rich family donated its extensive collection of thousands of artifacts to the city in 1954.The museum contains the materials formerly part of the Cathedral Vestry Board, along with more recent finds. The paintings from the Golini I and Golini II tombs, named after their discoverer, are on display in the museum. I loved the opening piece, it's a funery cippus dating back to the 6th century B.C. but it certainly isn't the oldest item on show.Vases are certainly numerous, as evidenced by the black Attic style one in pic 4; it dates back to 4th century BC.The famous Temple of Belvedere, an Etruscan monument (just off Viale Crispi), supplied many of the items on display. The terra cotta antefix in pic 2 is a fine example; in my humble...

safe ways to travel

by rkearns

i like to just travel around towns with my purse....like almost every woman does in western countries. i think you will stand out more if you are stashing dough inside your clothes in a carrier. i usually just bring as much money as i will need for what i'm doing when i go out (dinner and drinks, or grocery shopping), that way if it is stolen, i'm not out my entire loot of travel money.

Pompeii

by Balam

I Pompeii is fantastic and we never had a guide, Evan had learnt about it at school and so with that knowledge and a book with a map we explored the city. 8 hours later we had nopt stopped and it was time to go but we still had not seen all of it but we had seen lots of places that the tours do not reach. We have to go back just to see the bit's we missed but i would never get a guide. Good Book and a Good Map are all you need!

280 ways to enjoy yourself

by iandsmith

Rome has fountains like Paris has clothing shops like New York has coffee lounges. Sadly, they're mostly overlooked except for Trevi, the Fontana Dei Fiumi (Piazza Navona) and La Barcaccia at the Spanish Steps. However, that still leaves you with 277 others you may have overlooked. With my natural curiousity I stumbled across a few and was delighted by them all. Research afterwards made me even more pleased that I had.For example, we boarded one of the tour buses that circulate Rome and, at one of the stops, I couldn't help but notice a wonderful example so I went and took a picture. Here is that fountain's story. Fontana del Tritone - Piazza BarberiniThis fountain, one of the most beautiful of the city, was built in 1643 by Bernini. Between the dolphins' tails that support the shell on which it rises and the Triton crouches, Bernini placed two coat-of-arms of the Barberini family. The...

Street&piazza names: Italian history galore

by Trekki

During my travels I always find a certain fascination in street or plaza names. Very often they tell so much about the history of a country, region or town. Italy is no exception and despite the regional heroes and events usually range higher, some names and dates will be found throughout whole Italy. XX Settembre: this refers to September 20, 1870, the last days during Risorgimento, or unification of Italy, when King Vittorio Emanuele II captured Roma and threw the popes out of power. (It was more to the unification than this of course). Streets or piazza named XX Settembre are very much popular throughout Italy, one of these is in almost every city or town. Sometimes there is reference to breccia Porta Pia in this context. This is referring to the hole, Vittorio Emanuele II’s troops made into the Aurelian Walls near Porta Pia. Giuseppe Garibaldi‘s name will likely also appear in many...

Festival dates: often not shifted to weekend

by Trekki

There are two types of festival “dates” in Italy as far as I could see. If a festival is being held at “the last weekend/Saturday/Sunday in month xx”, then this means what it says: the last weekend or a specific weekend day. But if an exact date is given, it will not moved to the following weekend because these kinds of dates are often (maybe always) connected to a specific date in the life of a saint or other historical relevant dates. For example the celebration of Santa Rosa in Viterbo, La Macchina di Santa Rosa: this is always held on September 3, the day before Santa Rosa’s corpse was being transferred to the monastery of Poor Clares. Corsa di Ceri in Gubbio, one of the most fascinating festivals in honour of Sant’Ubaldo, is always celebrated on May 15, the day before Sant’Ubaldo died. The famous Palio di Siena is always on July 2 (in honour of Madonna di Provenzano) and on August 16...

Opera isn’t always musical opera :-)

by Trekki

Don will be able to explain the origin of the word opera as the musical word much better than I can ever do. But let me give it a try. The Italian word opera is much older and does simply mean “work”. Consequently it is used where work is exhibited. When I first saw “Museo dell’Opera del Duomo” written on a building in Orvieto I smiled and thought oops, this has nothing to do with a music opera but must stand for the artwork in context with the cathedral. So in case you look for an opera to listen to music, ask for opera in musica or opera lirica. (But then some of the younger generation might think of a browser only when they hear Opera...)© Ingrid D. (just in case, RickS or others come along and think they can steal texts).

Holidays in Italy & best time to travel

by Trekki

With the geographic location of Italy and the rich variety of landscapes there is almost no limitation for best of worst time to travel. Though there is one exception and this is Ferragosto, when it is almost impossible to get a bed on short notice, especially at seaside towns. This is the time when many Italians take their whole days of holiday and are gone mostly at the beach or in the cooler parts of the mountain regions. Consequently, many administration offices are closed and many family run businesses like hotels, pensions, restaurants, as well. But then it is a good time to visit the bigger cities because it might mean less people, albeit more foreign tourists. Anyone who wants to visit the “real” Italy or the “real” regions should come in May or October. First of all these are considered mostly low season, consequently the prices might be lower than in high season. Cities and...
