Most wanted lakes, Five Lands and some mountain

by microsensazione

Ops......Santa Margherita Ligure is in the "Far West"!Let's think a plan considering this information!First of all you are not so far from "Cinque Terre" (translated is "Five Lands") so I suggest a deep tour over there. Not only "Five Lands", there are many other interesting places there.Take a look on:http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/c2f74/38/4/you'll find a tip I have prepared some weeks ago about three days on "Five Lands" and places around there. It requires three days.I highly recommend to use only trains, boats and feet to move around that area. Of course you could go around by car but the problem is to find quickly a place where to park it.Have a look to a possible plan:Day 1: - Arrival in Milan and go to Maggiore Lake [train] - Maggiore Lake (MOTTARONE - don't miss it!) [funicular]Day 2: Maggiore Lake (STRESA and ISOLE BORROMEE) [boat]Day 3: Como Lake - (VARENNA and BELLAGIO)...

Two weeks in North of Italy: some ideas

by microsensazione

Hello!I consider you have already visited Venice and you have 12 days to go around in North of Italy. I'd suggest you to balance train and car usage. By far I suggest car but if you have seven days to stay in Milan, well, there is too traffic and you risk to loose a lot of time!Well, let's have a look about a possible plan, as a first possible idea.Three nights stay in COMO LAKETwo nights stay in BRUNICOSeven nights in DESENZANO DEL GARDA or in SIRMIONE (it is more convenient than Milan in terms of relax, tourism opportunities, towns reachable)Day 1: Arrival in Milan and go to Como Lake [train]Day 2: COMO LAKE (VARENNA, BELLAGIO) [boats]Day 3: MAGGIORE LAKE [train, boats]Day 4: - Go to DESENZANO DEL GARDA [train] - Hire a car, I have found the following car rental http://www.autonoleggioeurocar.it/index_uk.html (GPS navigator suggested) - BRESSANONE (don't miss NOVACELLA ABBEY on...

Many places and few days...

by microsensazione

Many places and few days...I don't know your interests and your age anyway, if you intend to take a quick look of most important things and "fatigue" is a word you don't know, you could plan in this way:Day 1: ROMEDay 2: ROMEDay 3: ROMEAfter, hire a car, a GPS navigator and keep your "headquater" in an "Agriturismo" around Siena. You can search for it on http://en.agriturismo.it/tuscany/index.jsp...I suggest you to choose "Siena" province because it's strategic to reach Pisa and, on other side, Assisi.Day 4: ROME (early morning) -> ASSISI -> AgriturismoDay 5: Agriturismo -> SIENA -> AgriturismoDay 6: Agriturismo -> PISA -> AgriturismoDay 7: Agriturismo -> FLORENCE -> Treviso (late evening)Treviso is a nice town not so far from Venice. It's cheaper than Venice and well positioned to save time to reach Dolomiti Alps.Day 8: Treviso -> TRE CIME DI LAVAREDO ->...

A deep fIrst visit in Italy

by microsensazione

Two or three months in Italy?Great!I should suggest you April, May and June as travel months and begging from South (on April usually in the North is not so warm). The following link could be useful for youhttp://en.agriturismo.itYou'll find a map of Italian Regions with many "Agriturismi": a good way to decide where to stay.As you have many days consider to get the best from Italy so think about staying in a Region for a week and after go in an other Region. It can seem wearisome but it's the best way to get all by my Country!By far I think, in your case, car is the best way to go around Regions.Hiring a motorhome could be an other interesting idea...Anyway I should organize the travel in this way:1 - One week: Sicily2 - One week: Calabria3 - One week: Campania (Pompei, Amalfi Coast, Naples, Capri, ...)4 - Two weeks: Lazio and Rome5 - One week: Apulia (reach Brindisi by flight from Rome...

Buy a SIM-card

by dutchboycalledjan

If your phone is SIM Lock free: just buy a SIM-card with an Italian number. We've done this, it is easy and cheaper when you call numbers in Italy (hotel, restaurants, taxi). Usually you have like 10 euro's to use and you can later extend it. I would send a SMS with the (new) number to the one's you need to call and let them call you (or even better: have them text you too). Another way is to find an internet café and send a mail. My daughter had a different strategy: she just asked some one if she could send a message with somebodies phone. Cheers,Jan

Help call-center for tourists

by effeti

Starting today, may 15th 2010, a new service for tourists is available 7 days a week, up to 10 PM-They will be able to answer in 7 languages (italian, english, french, spanish, german, russian and chinese) and help you in case of incidents, car crashes, problems, illness, complaints or simply tourists info for the place you are or plan to go to. The number to call, from Italy, is kind of easy to remember 039.039.039 exactly like the international calling number for italy repeated three times.Since i would be very interested to know if they are really useful...feedback will be appreciated and added here!

Great Apartment and GREAT Tour Guide!!

by Birdfan

My advice is to stay in an Apartment in Rome or anywhere in Europe and base yourself there. I have stayed in 3 different apartments in Paris, one in Rome.We had a great apartment very close to the Spanish steps on the Via Balbuino. Staying in a community where day to day life happens around you, you are drawn into it and to me the experience is so much better. You meet the locals and really get a feel for the area...not to mention, if done well ahead of time with much research...Cheaper and more comfortable. We had breakfast everyday and bought local produce to make a dinner or two. Campo de Fioriis a great place to watch Italian life, eat and find great ingredients for SpagettiI would stay away from the real touristy areas like the coliseum and stay a bit more off the beaten path. Our Apartment turned out to be on a upscale area with many designer stores ect..but sharing the cost with my...

Music – get yourself in the mood (CDs, IPod)

by Trekki

While preparing my next trip to Italia, this time by car from my hometown (and not by plane and then rent a car), I am realising how much I depend on listening to music in the car. So I bought the best CD ever with the most kitschy nostalgic songs ever, the ones where I fear that schmaltz will fill my car within seconds.... But I am already picturing myself, driving south, and loudly singing these songs while images of caffè, sun and beach materialise in my head. Haha, it is definitely a generation thing, youngsters skip continue reading now. Maybe I might buy a white skirt with huge red polka dots, Italian sunglasses, a headscarf and maybe I will exchange the car with a vespa..... like here, here or here.Ok, to make the silly story short: buy or burn a collection of the most prominent Italian songs to get you into the mood. The best are definitely the ones of Fifties and Sixties. Some...

Religious paintings

by iandsmith

How many of these can you take? After your 100th Jesus on the cross (make that a thousand), poor old San Sebastian with all those bloody arrows hanging out of him and the forever-tortured breasts of the Sicilian Saint Agatha I was slightly apalled at the Christian prediliction for horror. The fear factor has been, and still is, used extensively by those who seek power so I don't suppose I should be surprised; it's simply that for a supposedly loving, caring faith, it would be nice to see more tender images in the mould of Madonna and Child. This shot was taken in the Castel Nuovo in Naples. As I toured around on my third visit I also came across the images of death in the form of skeletons in many forms; i.e., bas reliefs (pic 2), inlaid into floors (pic 3) etc. All a bit horrific really.
