Sardinia rocks

by iandsmith

Sardinia has rocks, lots of them and they are spectacular, particularly in the north east of the island where the fabulous Capo d'Orso is a standout among standouts. To see it all you have to click on the pic because it is a panoramic shot stitched from three photos as it's almost impossible to get the rock in one shot. Another really good place to see bizarre rock formations is near San Pantaleo, a small village not far from Cannigione or Arzachena. They are all products of millenia of weathering.

Via Krupp

by iandsmith

Via Krupp connects the area of the Charterhouse and the Gardens of Augustus with Marina Piccola, once linked to the town exclusively by way of Via Mulo.Commissioned by the German industrialist, Friedrich Alfred Krupp, the pathway was built in the early 1900’s, overcoming a difference in height of approximately 100 meters,Via Krupp was designed and realized by the engineer Emilio Mayer, who cut through the rock almost to the sea, creating a series of hairpin bends set so close together they appear almost to overlap.Observing the path from on high or walking along the winding route, one is inevitably struck by such an incredible feat of engineering and artistic genius, made all the more captivating by the typically Mediterranean vegetation which spontaneously grows along the path.Along Via Krupp there is a small gate marking the way to the Grotta di Fra’Felice, where Krupp built his villa...

Short history of the Saracens

by iandsmith

The Saracens were originally nomads belonging to tribes of the Syrian or Arabian deserts but at the time of the Crusades it became the name used by Christians for all Muslims. In a surge of conquest Muslim Arabs swept into the Holy Land (today's western Palestine), north into the Byzantine territory of Asia Minor, and westward through North Africa during the 7th and 8th centuries. Spain was conquered (called Moors there), together with most of the islands in the Mediterranean; they held Sicily from the 9th to the 11th century. Their expansion was halted by the Carolingians in France only with great difficulty. The Crusades against them, though initially effective, did not prove decisive in the long term, and they weren't finally expelled from Spain until the 15th century. They also resided in parts of Sardinia and raided from their bases there. In many places on the northern...

Arco Naturale

by iandsmith

I couldn't get enough of walking on Capri. It mattered little where I chose to stride, my expectations were always exceeded. The second morning I chose the Arco Naturale as my goal. It seemed hardly any time at all before I was there. The initial foray through the alleys of Capri were special enough, twisting this way and that with tantalizing glimpses here and there of things to come.An old man resting pointed me in the right direction and soon I was there, the massive cleft in the rocks that was once a cave. This rock had a significant impact on me. I hadn't discovered in my research that it even existed. Faraglioni, Blue Grotto and Anacapri were the things to do yet here I found the most spectacular formation on Capri, followed closely by the massive cave above Marina Piccola.Just getting there was a bit special, the route meandering through the eastern alleys out of Capri, passing by...

Faraglioni - Capri

by iandsmith

Faraglioni, a name it will take you a couple of days to remember, a name you'll ultimately never forget. They stand prominently on the "other side" of the island. The other side, that is, of the town of Capri. To best view them there are a number of vantage points, not least of which is from the water itself. From the land Punta Cannone and Monte Solaro offer sweeping vistas while the Garden of Augustus is the most popular viewing platform. The get up close and personal you need to walk the Via Matromania. The term Faraglioni is descriptive of a geological formation where high, sheer cliffs have been eroded by nature to the point where sections now remain isolated from the mainland. They can be formed either of limestone (Capri's) or be of volcanic origin and their isolation may have resulted from tectonic movement or progressive massing of lava. The characteristic feature is always the...

Castelsardo

by iandsmith

The small town of Castelsardo is set on an imposing rock overlooking the sea and was built in such a strategically high position for defensive purposes from possible attacks from said sea. Castelsardo is a classic example of Medieval town which developed around its castle. Its old town walls are still intact which makes it a magnet for tourists and thus the historical town centre is the most interesting part of the town. In the surrounding area the Elephant Rock, a prehistoric tomb that was shaped like an elephant by the atmospheric agents, is worth a visit; other sites are the old monastery and a few nuraghes. The town’s position is geographically optimal for exploring the Northern coastline of Sardinia, with Sassari only 30 kilometres away and 35 kilometres from Porto Torres, from where one can go on a boat excursion to the island of Asinara, an ex prison island where you can see the...

Monte Limbara - Sardinia

by iandsmith

This great lump of rock, sitting in the middle of northern Sardinia, is festooned with communications antenna on Punta Balestreri.Monte Limbara is a granite mountainous range situated in the heart of the Gallura. To the north it looks over the plains of Tempio, to the south-west it is bordered by the river Coghinas and to the south-east by the depression of Monti, Oschiri, Padrogiano and Olbia. Although not reaching an elevated height (at just over 1300m), the Limbara appears imposing and evocative, characterised by rocky summits modelled by the elements that over the millennia have given them strange and eccentric forms. The highest is the Punta Balistreri, that reaches 1359m. On the mountain two forest areas are found: one on the northern slope, the other on the southern. The first one, belonging to the municipality of Tempio Pausania, is included within the SIC (Sites of Community...

A day in Venice

by iandsmith

It's a happening ruin, in transit so to speak. The crumbling plaster, exposed brickwork, flaking paint, bolts with brackets holding walls together, buildings at crazy angles, cables hanging from nothing going nowhere, streets so narrow at times you have to turn sideways to pass by other couples; the uneveness of the cobbles straining your legs. It's a nightmare. The population is in decline; people don't want to live there and who can blame them. Modern living has almost bypassed this place. The gondolier has found a client, a French couple with a pram and a group of Americans quickly follow in the second craft. They both choose the 100 euros cheap ride as distinct from the 150 euros grand tour. I ponder whether or not they accept cheques, my sense of humour not having diminished on iota. Our window is adorned with African violets and imitation roses plus purple fake flowers set in...

Sardinia

by iandsmith

If you like rocks; lots of rocks; lots of rocks in all shapes and sizes then you'll love Sardinia! If you like beaches with emerald water and white sand then there's much here for you as well.I only spent a week and it was all on the north part of the island. If you're expecting the same as the mainland then you'll be disappointed. Sardinia is Sardinia and that's the way they like it. Wandering the inland with the verdant fields beside you, the rocky mountains in the background and the occasional historic semi-ruin scattered around. This is something I conjure up every time I recall Sardinia.Every so often you'll come across a Nuraghe remnant or a Romanesque church that creates a moment or two of interest and drew me to enter the carpark at more than one.
