One of a kind

by iandsmith

There are places in Italy that don't exist. I mean not on VT, not on "Google", not anywhere.Bassano Inferiore (according to the sign at the village) is one such village. Then again, it could be Bazzano Inferiore, depending on your source! Situated just north of Spoleto in Umbria, Bassano Inferiore beckoned me as I was trying to decide where to go next. Should I stop in Spoleto or go for Norcia? It was while I was contemplating the answer that the early evening light favoured a ruined castle off to my left and, drawn inexorably as I am to such things, I deviated. It really was a ruin. Houses had been built using bits of the old wall and olive trees grew where soldiers once gathered. The clear outline of a fort from a distance was blurred when you were up close. I scrambled about seeking to get a good angle for a photo but the difficulties were many and this was the best I could come up...

Suggestion of Itinerary for North Italy

by mariaschmidt

We have just been for 10 days in Italy in the northern part and I can tell you that looking at your plan I feel a bit dizzy :-) I think sleeping in a different place almost every night might be tiring. More specific Siena is south to Firenze so it should be before if you come from the south. I would leave out some places and spend more time in a few chosen spots. We have done our 10 days as following. We landed in Verona took our rented car spent the night there, then drove to Venice where we parked the car for 2 days. In Venice we slept 2 nights (we loved Venice) and then took the car to Chianti area. We slept 4 nights in a lovely village between Florence and Siena called Greve in Chianti and did daytrips to Florence, Pisa, Siena and around the lovely Toscana views. After that we drove north to Lake Garda where we spent our last 3 nights in Riva del Garda and from there we took day trips...

Gubbio, old Umbrian town.

by Chrissy50

Gubbio is a beautiful place and should not be missed, I was there 2 years ago and it was only to be an overnight stop however deciced to stay an extra day. Would loved to have more time but 4 weeks in Italy is definately not enought to catch more than a good glimps but when next in Italy will visit Gubbio again and spend more time. A lot of the well known Hill Towns in Italy seem to have lot's of non Italian tourists and they detract slightly, when we were in Gubbio I can't honestly say we noticed any non Italian tourists, we spent 2 wonderful days roaming the streets and enjoying the sights. We had driven from San Marino and the route we took had beautiful scenery, a truly lovely drive.

Saving money and savouring the true Italy

by dublinjames

House swapping is a good way to keep accommodation costs to a minimum. Hunt around on the net. It can be best to find a central location in each country and use it as a base. Alternatively, if choose a hotel/BnB and it includes breakfast, make sure you eat it or pocket any food you can carry. For lunch, go to local food shops and stock up on bread, cheese, meats, etc every day and cut out the cost of food while you are out and about (especially useful when you are travelling as food on trains, at tourist sites, etc can be very expensive). It Italy, keep an eye out for Tratorias (as opposed to restaurants) where you eat from a set menu. It can be much cheaper than a regular restaurant and the food is typically just as good. Generally, you get three courses, water, wine and coffee for a set price. You eat what's on the menu with usually two choices for each course and you eat local food....

Florence

by traveldave

Florence was founded in 59 B.C. when Julius Caesar established a colony in order to control a crossing point on the Arno River. Later, traffic along the Via Flaminia--the road from Rome to northern Italy and Gaul--helped Florence become a regional center for trade and commerce. After the Dark Ages, Florence became an independent city-state. In the thirteenth century, the city became a center for the wool and textile trade, as well as a banking center, making it one of Italy's leading cities. The establishment of the Florentine Republic led to rule by the city's leading noble families, the most influential of which were the Medicis. During their rule, Florence became the leading cultural and intellectual center in Europe. Artists, sculptors, architects, and writers were attracted to Florence by wealthy patrons who supported the arts. During the Renaissance, such notable writers as Dante,...

Venice

by traveldave

Venice was founded in the sixth century when people from the neighboring Veneto region fled from the Goths and established a small collection of villages among the islands in the lagoon. The strategic location of Venice at the head of the Adriatic Sea meant that it would grow economically with the establishment of trade routes, especially with Byzantium.By the Middle Ages, Venice had expanded in power and influence throughout the eastern Mediterranean Sea, leading to the conquest of Byzantium in 1204. By the sixteenth century, the city-state held a monopoly on all trade in the Mediterranean Sea, and had colonized northeast Italy from the Adriatic Sea to the Alps. However, by the eighteenth century, Venice experienced a decline in its fortunes due mainly to the decadence of its aristocracy, who frittered away their inherited wealth on lavish parties and gambling. The weakened city was...

It is called the Eternal City, and most probably with the reason. Here, in one place, we can follow the history of the world, all way from its prechristian days. In its long history, over 2000 years now, for many centuries Roma was the centre of the world and its catipal town.....

My favorite location in Italy...

by croisbeauty

My favorite location in Italy is Provincia di Verona where I have spend many days and nights. Nice town, friendly people, good restaurants and fine wines. What can one expected more?Besides Arena and Casa di Giulietta (Julia's home) you must see Castelvecchio, Arche Scaligere, San Zeno, Piazza Dante, Duomo, Teatro Romano, S.Fermo and of course, Museums. On the picture there is Sirmione situated on Lago di Garda
