The Appian Way--Maybe the most famous via in Italy

by unravelau

I know, I know -- the next comment will be from someone saying what about the via Flamina............ or another equally famous. Well, from childhood and up until say four years ago, I had never paid much attention to any other via in Italy, but the Appia had been given a lot of attention.Apart from the fact that some of the original still remains, I find it really interesting that it ribboned its way through a huge part of the countryside that I have spent my two trips to Italy in -- nearly 12 months all up. So, I have had considerable time to ponder this and some opportunities to photograph its remains in a couple of places.See travelogue for more photo's as I find them and put them up. I miss that it's like living in an adventure -- you never know what you are likely to see, smell, hear or sense from the moment you get up until you fall into bed, often quite late at night.The...

No more Lire or Lira

by SLLiew

Italians has fully converted to Euro dollars and cents since 2002.So if you have thrown your lire coin into the fountain, you may not get your wish to automatically return to Rome. You will have to throw a Euro coin to ensure that wish (just kidding).Well, EU is like the Roman Empire where one currency is used. So I guess the Italians are used to the idea of a common currency through out most of Europe. But I am keeping my lire for old time's sake.

When We Visit, We Have a Gelato a Day!

by deecat

Just as we did the first time in Italy, we ate a gelato a day on our 4th trip. While in Mondavio, Allan and I were ready for our daily gelato. I had read somewhere that there was an ice-cream place with fine views at a bar in the "little shaded park near the square". Well, we found it.It is called Il Giardino, and it is, indeed, a lovely spot to stop and partake of delicious Italian gelato. We were the only people in the establishment (It seemed we were the only people in the village)!A man was on a ladder cleaning the chandelier. The woman who managed the bar was supervising his work.Allan had three dips: some kind of chocolate, a chocolate with nuts, and an equivalent to vanilla.I enjoyed mine gelato on a cone, and it was two dips of "Bachio".Our total bill came to 3 Euro!In Gaeta, we returned to an old favorite of ours from 1997 called Il Pinguino where we loved their deserts. They put...

I just came from Italy to Finland and I already miss the lovely country! If you go to Italy, try to visit as many cities as possible, so you'll get a view of every place! When I'm away from Italy I miss the pasta, the pizzas, the Italian people and of course the warm air!

The Dolomites

by SLLiew

When our tour bus head from Italy towards Austria, before reaching the Alps, we were kept awake by the amazing scenery around us.Dolomite rounded hills sprout up the sky. We could see towns built on top of these hills. Incredible geological landscape with unexpected human settlements that seem to have taken opportunities of these hills as defense to build homes and forts.

Day 2 - Lago di Garda

by codrutz

Impressed by Venice I've set the compas to Lago di Garda, taking the A4 (Venice-Milano) that passes Padova - Vicenza - Verona. Exiting at Peschiera del Garda was harder than I thought, there were no signs for what road to take to the right bank of the Lake Garda (Lasize, Bardolino a.s.o.). Finally found the road and took the drive - some slow trip because the road is narrow and there were indeed many speed traps on the road - electronically mounted on the right of the road, telling how much speed you were doing. I was not impressed by Bardolino and made the first stop in San Vigilio, a very small and retreated place, very quiet - just a handfull of tourists zipping an espresso on the side of the lake. Then we have reached Malcesine - my favourite place on Lake Garda - nice place to wonder in the city - visit the castle, see the nice lake views and eat at the restaurants on the lake...

Day1 - Venice

by codrutz

Ariving in Italy by my own car was an experience that I was consindered with some anxiety because of the advices circulating about driving in Italy (mostly true - Italians care less for their cars that is why the majority of cars have dents, bumps and schratches). In my country people get very frustrated when touching their cars against others, and they do not stand a couple of days before seeing it as new - Italians of the other side seems to not notice the bad status of their car :) But I was very lucky during my trip in Italy - I did not had any (as small) trouble. So I am happy to report my trip.Day 1 - Entering Italy at Tarvisio(IT)/Villach(A), after driving cca 1000km from Szeged (HU), I have arrived in Venice pretty early, at around 6pm and found - after rounding a roundabout three times :) - looking for the Malcontenta, where the Palladio Hotel was. Finally found the hotel - very...
