    Go Horse Riding at Campello

by NonnaLou Updated Sep 15, 2008

Just outside of Itri there is a verdant plateau called Campello.

At one time this was inhabited but has long since been abandoned, remains of the buildings can still be seen.

During the month of August many of the locals gather up at Campello and set up a huge campsite.

Here there is a centre for Horse Riding.

Venture A Little Further Inland to Campodimele

by NonnaLou Written May 14, 2007

Venture a little further inland, where there are fertile, verdant valleys dotted with traditional farmhouses.

The picturesque, medieval village of Campodimele is perched high on a hilltop and is encircled by formidable, walls, cylindrical turrets, and ancient houses that form part of the defensive structure.

The is a path leading around the town walls, from which there are stunning views of the countryside. The parish church, dedicated to St Michael The Archangel was built in the 11th century.

The town has been awarded the European title of
    "The Village of Eternal Youth"
as it is noted for the longevity of its citizens.

Follow the Wildlife Path and Butterfly Garden

by NonnaLou Updated May 11, 2007

Visit the Nature Park and Butterfly Garden in the Aurunci National Park Centre.

This is situated just outside of Itri. Here you can learn more about the local wildlife.

The Centre also has a Plant Nursery which propagates local natural plants and has a Wood and Craft Workshop.

From Itri take the Via Civita-Farnese heading for Campodimele.
Look out for signposts for the "Vivaio and Falegnameria".

At the Summit.........click for the birds

by unravelau Written May 6, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Arriving at the top of the mountain was quite an experience for a number of reasons. It was like another world. Down below, the Itri where many people lived, laughed and built their flower displays and up above with all of the older rocks.
The first thing that I noticed really while I was getting my breath, were the birds......very distinctive. I don't recall ever seeing them in Australia but there were hundreds flying around up there. Flying around all over this different land........amazing.
