  • The battles for Monte Cassino started in 1944. The Germans held the Gustav Line which was effectively 3 valleys. The assault on Monte Cassino cost the lives of 54000 allies and 20000 germans. Eventually, a patrol of Free Poles from the 12th Podolian Uhlans entered what was left of the monastery after blanket bombing by the US Airforce.
There are cemeteries in honour of all these men dotted around the rebuilt monastery

    The Abbey shuts at lunchtime.

We have been caught out before. The opening hours are:

    08.30 to 12.30
    and
    15.30 to 17.00 or 18.00.

We have visited the Abbey during the Winter Months and found that the Museum was closed during this period, although it is open on Sundays.

The advantage is that at this time of year there are no hoards of crowds and you can virtually have the place to yourself.

We listened to Vespers being sung in the Abbey. It was divine and so peaceful !!!

Also try to visit some of the War Cemeteries.

Looking over the courtyard to the valley below you will see where the monks established a vineyard just ourtside the Abbey wall. Can you imagine how many bottles of wine have been produced over the last 1000 years?

The Abbey is large and there would have been a large number of monks in full time residence, the hills surrounding the Abbey still retain the terraces which extend for hundreds of metres down the hill, it would have been hard times being a monk during the middle ages.

The gardens offer relief to the somewhat stark stone buildings and as you wander through them you come across a variety and size of ornaments and statutes.

    The Polish Cemetery
During World War II the Abbey was the centre of a 4 month battle as it controlled the valley below and the road to Rome. During this period there were considerable loss of personel and outside the Abbey walls is the Polish Cemetery for those lost in the battle.

The huge courtyard can sometimes be crowded depending upon how many tour buses have arrived. Standing in the middle lets you get a feeling for the size of the Abbey and as you look over the side of the courtyard you observe the sheer drop to the valley and town below. It is now you realise the work the monks did over 1000 years ago to estabilish the abbey, all materials had to be carried up the hill.

    Doves In Abbey Gardens
As you walk around the Abbey you will enter some sheltered gardens, well kept lawn with fountains, small trees and flowers. A family of white doves have made these gardens their home and they look beautiful against the lush background of the garden.

    The Abbey of Monte Cassino
The Abbey of Monte Cassino was founded by St. Benedict around 529 A.D. It was damaged many times, the last time during the II world war in 1944 when it was the place of the battle. It happened that the monastery was on the Gustav line.
After 1945 the reconstruction works started and in 1964 the Pope Paolo VI made the Basilica the Abbey.
It is really worth to see the Abbey for its architecture and a beautiful view form a tarrace. You will be able to see the panoramic view on the whole valley and the Polish cemetery.

The entrance to the Abbey is free.
Remember not to miss the museum!
