An old rock -- with a history

but the southern route is not so busy. Just out of town on the main road towards Scauri - Minturno and then Campania, you will see this structure, and probably wonder about it like me. Mind you the photo was taken out of a moving bus and therefore may not be as clear as if I had been standing there. None-the-less, you can definitely see that it is not in tune with its surroundings at all.

A quick browse around the available information on the www has not brought forward anything specific excepting that Formia indeed was a big item in the days of Caesar, Cicero, Mark and Cleo etc..... but what about this rock.

I do have this bit of a guide, albeit in Italian (not a lot of use to me) and dated as being published in 1995 -- but the information and pictures from within look far older. Anyway I have located this photo (p 100) and they call it Sepolcro localmente detto la Torricella -- If anyone is interested I could scan the photo and Italian to them........hint, hint -- then maybe I would know what it is all about too.

    The Oldest Church in Formia.

Formia's oldest church, S Maria di Castagneto.

The Chiesa di S Maria di Castagneto, is said to be the oldest church in Formia. To see it, you can catch a bus from Formia marked Trivio, Castellenorato and ask to be let off at the end of the street of the church. On Thursday mornings the bus actually goes right past the church to let people off at the large market (out of town), called the supermercato..................also worth the visit too. If you have reasonable Italian, it would be a good idea to discover its opening times to have a look inside.....................

Don't forget to pick up your bus ticket from any tobacci shop as they will not issue them on the bus...............this is a fairly uniform practice in Lazio.
