Minturno Things to Do

  • Minturno's Mysteries.

This is of the remaining part of a tiled floor in Minturno. Firstly I thought that the picture offered some insight into the bathing habits of the ancient ones, but then I moved toward thinking that they may have been stomping on grapes. Now I am back to being confused again because I realised that the three in the bath (?) have wings and the one...

  • Notice, yes please for the Archeological...

Well, once you've seen this sign it literally marks the site and directs you to dig into how the ancient romans lived way back. Such a lot of work has gone into this site and it still continues.Next door on the Southern side is the Garigliano River. On the Northern side, but on the same side of the road can be found a war memorial park and just a...

  • A showstopper in the Ancient Theatre.

I visited Minturno archeological diggings on a day where they were preparing the stage for a show to be held that night. Fantastic to see the stage hands building, sawing etc, in front of the theatre seats at least 2 thousand years old........I was wishing that I could stay but no such luck............the usual, get on the road otherwise sleep...

  • No prizes (I'm sorry), for guessing what...

The ancient Romans did some marvelous things, not the least of which is the origins of the flush loo. I don't know whether the water ran continuously washing away the human waste, or if they had a lever to open the flood gates............wouldn't surprise me if it had been electronic either. But just imagine sharing your morning, first thing to do,...

inside the upper levels of the castle at Minturno township. I can remember being astounded at the thickness of the walls of these ancient castles.

  • A cursory glance at Ancient Roman...

be sufficient for some visitors, but not me. I have to get right in there as if I were digging up the remains of the bygone past. There is a smallish museum tucked in away behind the huge ancient theatre here and it contained some wonderful information about the thermal heating for baths etc. ................ as well as some statues, one of which...

Minturno Favorites

  • Meanwhile, back at the Roman Section

While the bulk of this area seems to need a good downfall of rain, there were still places of shade from which to take a pic or two of the outside blandness. The Romans were a marvelous and inventive race, I feel.

  • Now up top and looking out of for yet...

Minturno is a very pretty place. Just as well we picked up some food when we found the general store because by the time we were ready to eat, all of the bars had closed for afternoon siesta.

  • The castle at Minturno............part...

Medieval section of the township is just about to the top of the hill (so what's new). They were busy working in the bottom section which wasn't open to tourists the day that I was there............... a different story up the top though. The views from here and any other part of the township are just beautiful. I miss all of Italy really, so...
