Byzantine mosaics were to be a focus of my trip to Rome, I knew they would be wonderful, they were and I must come back one day to see more. But, I also must come back to see more of the exquisite 12th century mosaic work of the Cosmati - the wonderfully precise and intricate mosaic inlaid work you see in so many of the city's churches. Floors, altars, walls, columns - it's everywhere and it's beautiful. Wonderfully diverse geometric patterns are executed in coloured stone, gold and glass tesserae on a fields of white marble around large circles and rectangles of porphyry and serpentine. The variety is infinite, the effect is fabulous. Leave a Comment

Borghese Museum by sandysmith Although we didn't go in this museum - we just enjoyed the park around it - it is well recommended. Make plenty of time for it there seemed to be quite a queue to get in as there are timed admissions. Staues and paintings a plenty to found within

by icunme Villa Borghese is huge and a good map will help immensely. The very best map of Villa Borghese is at the Rent a Bike Shop either by Villa Medici or by the entrance on Viale Goethe. An extremely simple and detailed map of the park.

I loved this little pair I saw at Ostia Antica - sweet and tender - though I'm not so sure about the intentions of the Cupid in the second photo. She doesn't look too happy! Leave a Comment

After further review of my last tip, I would have to say that this might be the better view. First, its free from cost and the hassle of waiting in lines. In addition, you have the beautiful confines of Villa Borghese at your back with all its ponds, paths, and silence... Pincio is the name of the hill directly above Piazza del Popolo. It is high above the square and gives a fantastic view over no less than 12 domes, including St Peters directly in front. With the noises of the city below it is the perfect place to contemplate just how wonderful a time you are having in Rome. It is best viewed in the early morning sun or with the sun lingering at dusk. Leave a Comment

Villa Borghese by GUYON Do a walking tour in the Villa Borghese, a pleasant garden near the Station Spagna and the famous Via Veneto. This romantic image is taken in the garden : a small lake, an island with a temple.
Using the stairs, leave the Garden by the Plazza del Popolo and walk Via del Corso. At the end of the afternoon, it is a pedestrian street with a lot of shops to visit. Leave a Comment

by SirRichard MUSEO CAPITOLINO The Capitoline Museum was built in the 17th century based on an architectural sketch by Michelangelo. In the first room is The Dying Gaul, a work of majestic skill that's a copy of a Greek original dating from the 3rd century B.C. In a special gallery all her own is the Capitoline Venus, who demurely covers herself. This statue was the symbol of feminine beauty and charm down through the centuries (also a Roman copy of a 3rd-century B.C. Greek original). Amore (Cupid) and Psyche are up to their old tricks near the window. The entrance courtyard (see photo at left) is lined with the remains (head, hands, foot, and a kneecap) of an ancient colossal statue of Constantine the Great. Piazza del Campidoglio / Phone: 06/67102071 / Open: Tues-Sun 9am-7pm. Bus: 44, 89, 92, 94, or 716. Admission (to both) 10,000L adults, 5,000L children under age 18. Free on last Sun of each month. I had the big luck of visiting Rome during the Week of Culture (May 5th to May 12th) in which all museums and monuments in Italy have free entrance. Not only this means huge savings but you can also visit many secondary places that normally would be left aside because they may not worth the money for just a quick visit. I was afraid to face long lines but it didn't happen at all. If you plan a visit next year try to catch this week which also overlapped with the Rome Tennis Open. Leave a Comment
