Favorite thing: Near the Colosseum is the church of St. Peter in Chains which is the tomb of Pope Julius II. The pope wanted to be entombed at St. Peter's, but he angered too many people. They honored his wish by placing him at St. Peter in Chains. Michelangelo sculpted his Moses for Pope Julius' tomb. See the exquisite sculpture.

Favorite thing: See this pretty Romanesque-style church near the Colosseum, SANTA FRANCESCA ROMANA, which is situated directly over a corner of the Hadrian-era Temple of Venus and Rome. (One end of the ancient shrine was devoted to the Goddess Roma and the other to Venus, who was considered to be the ancestress of the Caesars in Roman mythology.)

Favorite thing: Visit the BASILICA SANTA MARIA DEGLI ANGELI E DEI MARTIRI, located in what used to be the thermal baths of Diocletian (Terme di Diocleziano). The interior is beautiful, and there is also an interesting exhibit outlining the history of the building's transformation from baths into a church. Michelangelo is one of those who worked on it...

Favorite thing: Visit the many beautiful and ancient churches all around in the city. This is the Basilica of S. Paolo (there is a Metro stop here too... line B), a huge and wonderful one, quite outside the center.
Other beautiful churches you should not miss are: San Pietro (of course...), San Giovanni in Laterano, Santa Maria Maggiore, San Lorenzo fuori le mura, Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, San Sebastiano, Santa Sabina, Sant'Ignazio, San Clemente, Santa Maria degli Angeli, Santa Cecilia, Santa Maria in Trastevere, Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Sant'Agnese.... and thousands of other churches also extremely interesting !!

Favorite thing: Just up the hill is the Chiesa di San Pietro in Vincoli (Church of St. Peter in Chains) which has the statue of MOSES by Michelangelo. It is a moving sight. Try not to miss it.
Fondest memory: Then just down the street a bit (near the university) is a little student hangout where we had the best panini. Unfortunately, that's the only directions I can offer. Hope you find it.

Fondest memory: It is rather spooky to be inside the Bone Church. I have to look for the address but it's at Piazza della Republica. It's rather close to Via Veneto and the US embassy. i think...:-)
