Roasting Chestnuts by deecat We love to roam the streets, the main ones and the not-so-famous ones. We do get lost quite often, but all you have to do is ask. Italians are so accommodating and helpful. In order to see the "flavor" of the city, stroll the streets and be aware of the small, yet remarkable, scenes. Yes, do all the tourist activities, but make time for wandering. Some of our best "moments" happened when we least expected it. As we were walking to find a hotel in Rome for when Allan's sister came to see us in Gaeta for a week, and we had plans to bring her to see Rome), we really were not paying much attention to our surroundings. Suddenly, an old Italian man with a cane was trying to help a crying child. Of course, we stopped to see if we could assist. The child was lost, and she was English. Even though the Italian man could speak no English, his gentle hand on her back, his warm smile, and his reassuring voice all helped to calm the hysterical youngster. In time, between him hailing a policewoman and us speaking to her in English, all ended well. Two very greatful parents thanked us profusely and nodded to the old gentleman. He waved goodby, and that ever-present smile lit up his wonderful, wrinkled face. I tell you, that's one memory emblazoned forever in my mind. Another time, a street vendor roasting and selling chestnuts told us in his broken English, "You must be American. You are so friendly!" Now, we did not purchase the chestnuts so he was not attempting to use flattery. Those few words of his made us feel special, and they forever erased that Ugly American Stereotype that we've always fought so hard to dispel. It's this side of Rome that I cherish; I invite you to try to discover it too.
Once we left Rome, I missed the historical flavor, the vibrant activity, and the elegant fashions unique to Rome. But, most of all, I missed the people. Yes, Rome is an ancient yet modern city...one for All the Ages. Leave a Comment

Trastevere, Rome by tompt Across the river Tiber you will find the Trastevere area. The area is not as classy as other areas in Rome, but the people who live there are very proud and consider themselves the true Romans. Walk through the streets of this neighbourhood and take some beautiful pitoresque pictures. Leave a Comment

Go to Trastevere and just walk around, both night and day, slowly. Don't forget to smile casually at people, or just look happy (you will be). Keep your ears open for the sound of older Americans - you might run into some friendly expatriots. Stop by Pizza al Taglio for a slice with various kinds of toppings (my favorite is their four-cheese - very strong flavor). Go down Via del Moro and stop by Gauguin Cafe (after 8:00). If it's Tuesday then there will probably be a football game on (Roma and Milan are usually most popular) and you can hear some colorful language - you won't know what they're saying but you can guess. They have some of the friendliest people working there - it helps if you go regularly (i'm there all the time). A pint of Labat Ice is 3.60 a glass of wine (good size) is 2.70 and their food is pretty decent as well (try Pennette Arrabbiata - spicy).
Hmmm... not sure about that - maybe the first time I saw the Forum? Or it could just be the night that I went to Gauguin Cafe and laughed as the staff danced to the music they had on (I was the only customer there). Leave a Comment

Trastevere alleyway by sandysmith Trastevere is the quaintest part of Rome with its narrow alleyways and eateries galore. Its very popualar/lively at night and hence we chose to eat this side of the River most nights.
The rustic colours of this building with the washing hanging out just typified this area for me.

colors of Rome by tompt The buildings in Rome are either very old and pale gray or colored in any form of orange / yellow. Some streets are absolutely stunning to see because of this warm colors. Leave a Comment

by SirRichard TRASTEVERE Trastevere is at its best on a sleepy Sunday morning when the pox of weekday traffic has miraculously cleared and the neon signs have been turned off. Sunday is also the morning of the flea market called Porta Portese. Expensive antiques and matrioshka dolls share pavement space with single shoes, marble busts of Mussolini, African handicrafts, and even the occasional genuine bargain. The smells of sausage and chestnuts and spicy porchetta (roast pork) hover over the whole glorious mess. Porta Portese market. Open: Sunday 7am -1pm best entrance; viale di Trastevere & via Ippolito Nievo Leave a Comment

Take a walk into the fashion district. Just look into the windows of places like Gucci, Prada, and Armani and dream about wearing clothes like that! Even if you are not into stuff like that, you have to admire the workmanship that goes into the items. Leave a Comment

by fandango Trastevere and Tevere(river). See SAint Mary of Trastevere and its magnificient golden works. The Tevere, the river that cross Rome, cross it by the Isola Tiberina, and get lost on Trastevere, the more tipicall Roman quarter on the city. Leave a Comment

by Andrew_Liu VISIT COLUMN OF MARCUS AURELIUS People always want to leave some thing as a sort of continue of their life. An unimportant person can only leaves something doesn't attract much attention. But the king of Rome isn't the same certainly. One sort of these things is column. There is a twin of famous columns in Rome. One is Trajan¡¯s, the other is of Marcos Aurelius. The former was completed in AD113 and the latter finished in 80 years later. All the two are 100 feet high without there bases. The spiral surface of the columns body was carved fully the war story of Trajan and Aurelius. The territory of Rome reached the greatest in the times of Trajan. Their statues once stood at the top of the columns but they were replaced later by other power rulers. When I took this shop I can¡¯t see the carving carefully because the carving part is too high over me. When I saw a picture of the detail part in a book, I am surprised by its complex and exact carving, high skill and great engineering! Leave a Comment
