Rome - Porta Pia as seen from Via XX Settembre by Sarita76 The façade of Porta Pia's gate was Michelangelo's last architectural design. It was built between 1561 and 1564, requested by Pope Pius IV. The Pope opened the road named Strada Pia which linked the Quirinal with this gate. The outer part of Porta Pia was rebuilt under Pius IX in 1868. Leave a Comment

Rome - Porta Pia by night by Sarita76 The famous "breach of Porta Pia" took place on September 20 1870 when the Italian Bersaglieri (light infantry) entered Rome through this gate. The French Empire had just collapsed and left the Pope without allies as Napoleon III was protecting the State of the Church. Leave a Comment

by bugalugs On the Sunday morning we decided that the first place to visit was St. Peters Basilica. You can imagine how delighted we were that when we arrived the Pope was saying Mass. The piazza was packed and we were standing near the back, but that did not lessen our enjoyment. As you can see from the photograph there are large screens to be able to see everything much better. When mass is being celebrated in the piazza, entry into St. Peters is not possible. Leave a Comment

Pope Bonifacius ( to the left ) by MagicMixer Most Sundays you could attend the Mass and the Pope is there right in front of you. But if ( e.g. he is away from Rome ) he is not there don´t forget to see the graves of the former Popes, even the very first St Peter himself. You enter the St Peter the normal way ( remember the dressingcode , se my advice elsewhere ) and at the front there are stairs to the UNDERGROUND ( No, NOT the Metro ) Ande there they are, if not risen yet, the old Popes on Parade.
In Sweden we are Protestants, and I am not really a believer anyway, but I ALWAYS like to visit Catholic churches, and you never can tell........maybe I change one day :-) My old mother-in-law , in Poland, is , like most Polish, VERY Catholic. Sending her a couple of postcards of the Polish Pope and back in Sweden some photos , sent me right up to "her heaven" and will surely get me a couple of extra "vodkas" at my next visit. Nastrovie !!! Leave a Comment

Baroque Angel by Packerman See St. Peter's and the other major Jubilee basilicas of Santa Maria Maggiore, San Giovanni in Laterano, and San Paolo Fuori le Mura. St. Peter's is absolutely huge. I suggest buying Michelin's green guide of Rome and everytime you are looking at something interesting like a monument or ruin take time to read about it first and during, but the green guide is especially useful when visiting cathedrals, they tell you all the details and what is of particular notice.
It's tied between being in the Roman forum and St. Peter's cathedral. Both are a bit awe inspiring just to be there. Leave a Comment

Me and a few thousand of my closest frieneds by Skibbe Attending mass in St. Peter's Square. I'm not Catholic but I got so much out of it and watching the thrill the event was for others. You definitely know you're at something special. Leave a Comment

Visit the Vatican. Even though I am a very lapsed catholic I just had to visit the centre of the Roman Catholic religion. We arrived on a Sunday & were there for a blessing from 'Il Papa' It was a great event, very moving and I truly envy the thousands of people with such a great faith.
Great pizza & red wine! The Trevi Fountain at night was very impressive too Leave a Comment

List of popes at St. Peters by karenincalifornia In case you can't rattle off the names of all the popes over all the centuries, there is a list of them in St. Peters to jog your memory. The list in this photo is now out of date since there are been one addition in recent weeks. My son, the non-Catholic scholar in his Catholic high school, took this photo, no doubt to secure his position in religion class as a know-it-all. Leave a Comment

A celemony of Vatican by Andrew_Liu Vatican, the holy city of the Roman Catholicism of the world, we took a bus coming here in a clear day. After visiting the St.Peter Cathedral a team of rich dressed people appeared from right circle post corridor. We were pleased very much and took some shots as soon as we could. We thought that it is certainly some important ceremony that is a seldom chance hardly coming by. Only while I backed home and enjoyed this photo, I found that the team doesn¡¯t like that we thought. But I haven¡¯t got any answer till now. If you know, tell me, please! Leave a Comment
