Jonathan's Angels is one of the most bizarre bars I have ever been to.
It is owned by an ex-circus acrobat, Jonathan, who is also a bit of an artist......the bar is decorated in paintings of the man himself, impersonating famous people - eg. Jonathan as the Pope, Jonathan as Napoleon etc
Any wall space not covered with paintings of Jonathan is covered with other quirky paraphernalia. But the most bizarre of all is the toilet, which is worth a visit, even if you don't need to "go".
Staff are friendly and drinks are good, but not cheap - well worth a visit though!!
Dress Code: No one takes any notice of you, there is too much else to see here!!

45 Giri this is a place good for everything. I mean, you can have a nice aperitif there, you can have a dinner or you can just come a bit later to dance.
I like this place mostly because it allows you to come with a bunch of friends to have a very good drink (mojito is the best) and talk while a nice music is playing at the background.
For 8E you have a drink and you can help yourself with some small snacks from a buffet (pizza, rice, veggies). If you don't book a table you will need to leave it about 11pm, because at 12pm disco starts and people who book a table will come soon.
The interior is very simple, it's quite big with a very nice bar in a center. There are comfortable sofas with small tables in a lounge part and a restaurant at the second part.
So, stop there for a drink, dinner or to dance.
Dress Code: Casual, black is always good!
The place is located close to a university so there are mostly students.

Party animals, hear ye! After a hard day of sightseeing... and if you still have energy to party on, then you must set foot at the following clubs.
PIPER at: Via Tagliamento, 9, Roma.
(This is THE place to be and be seen in Rome.... Too bad. I didn't get to bump into any famous celebrity here. I was hoping to see Francesco Totti in person. Maybe he's busy with his wife and kid...)
HEAVEN at: Viale di Porta Ardeatina, 118a, Roma
(Another cool disco in Rome... but my personal preference is the PIPER)
JACKIE O' at: Via Boncompagni, 11, Roma
(You guessed it... Lots of well-known celebrities are known to congregate inside this club. And I DID get to bump into a few well-known Italian celebrities on the few occasions I was here, including the divine Miss Manuela Arcuri! No wonder men drool all over her cuz even I, a female, was quite taken in by her beauty! On that one occasion when I caught a glimpse of Manuela, she was with her then-boyfriend/ footballer, Francesco Coco. Er... please don't ask me whether they are still together....).
MAGIC FLY at: Via Bassanello, 15, Roma
(Not as rocking as Piper, Heaven or Jackie O. Perhaps you might like to check it out yourself. Who knows. Your taste maybe different from mine!).
Photo: Sorry, I don't have any pics of the clubs mentioned above. So here's a photo of our Bank's lavish entertainment staged at the Castelli Romani... Enjoy!
Dress Code: Please... the people in Rome do dress up when they chill out at the clubs and discos. So - DRESS UP! ;-)

Very chic, very stylish - get on the list if you can cause this is one hard club to get into, even if you are on the list! If you are an exceptionally good looking female and get the right person's attention, you may be given a lifetime VIP card that gets you right in all the time with no waiting and free drinks - good luck though, i have only see one girl do it!
The best way is to book a table - its more enjoyable anyway and worth the extra cash as you get bottle service and a fruit plate. Save your appetite though - around 3 am they serve pasta at the bar!
Dress Code: Dress very chic Italian - don't look like a tourist - they are super snobby about that.

This former stable area with its rowdy wine bars has remained true to its history in one way. It is now the rowdiest nightclub area of Rome - cars jam the parking lot - people line up for entrance to clubs that offer something for every taste (from discos to alternative open air and gay clubs on certain nights) and every wallet - lots of sleaze, nasty bouncers, and a distinct Bohemian atmosphere. The young locals are there enforce on any given night; but, of course, the weekends are a madhouse. It is far enough from residential neighborhoods to be no nuisance and in a not very desirable area - but if you're looking for decadant nightlife - this IS the place.
Photo 4 - A snippet of history on pre-nightclub Monte Testaccio - with excavated caverns housing rowdy wine bars and stables - at the time was not touched by the development of the new quarter and its inhabitants were proud of the new rione symbol, a testae, the amphorae used by the ancient Romans to contain wine and oil.
OTHER NOTABLE CLUBS - Amnesia (the club with the glass floor) - great club for people in their 20's & 30's. Also, ICE CLUB, Via Della Madonna Dei Monti, 20
is a MUST see - so cold its HOT - made entirely of Ice (they give you a warm-up wrap so you can stay while you drink to warm up!) The first one we saw was in Milano.
Dress Code: Whatever!

So, I didn't actually discover Supperclub in San Francisco. Years before they even opened their San Francisco venue I had my first Supperclub experience in Roma. Truly an experience. Great performances, drink, music, fashion and night culture. Fun was had by all. Tip: Be sure to make advanced reservations if you plan on doing the dinner/show. Otherwise the two bars (one with DJ music) are open to the public.
Dress Code: Fashion forward. Remember, you're in Italy and Italians know how to dress... sleek and fashionable. Check what the current treds are and look at the photos on the Supperclub website (www.supperclub.com). For travelers, I think the little black dress or black dress pants is a safe choice.

It's a place really worth your visit if you enjoy jazz. The building was built in the '30s, but it's newly renovated and it makes a great beckground for a jazz evening. Concerts are played in a beautiful garden, so you can enjoy not only music, but also a nice scenery.
For those who'd like to get something to eat before a concert there is a very nice and fancy restaurant with some tables overlooking the garden.
I have seen there Eddy Palermo Trio this August and I really enjoyed it.
The admission fee depends on a concert - it can be 10 E, 5 E or FREE
Check their website!
Dress Code: There is no dress code, everybody dress casual, however I'd rather dress nicely to fit to the atmosphere of the place. (Black is always a good choice :)

This tips should probably be classified as an amusement park! Romping about Roma with VT friend, Kathryn, it occurred to me that she just must see Jonathan's. We had spent such a lovely time in the rear salon of Cafe Antico Greco - now we had a rare opportunity to go from the sublime to the ridiculous (literally)! We found Jonathan's and just ducked inside as one of those impromptu little rainstorms hit the streets of Rome. I don't know what was more fun - the place itself or Kathryn's expressions as we discovered one off-beat item after another.
The bathroom is not to be missed. I ordered Pernod w/water back and received a huge glass that was half full - easily 3 times the ordinary serving - Kathryn had a glass of wine and our bill was 12 Euro.

The Circolo degli Artisti (artists circle) is the house of art and music underground live scene, with electronic music, hip hop, rock and other creative performances. There are two concert rooms, a dancefloor outfitted with a great sound system, a place for video projection, a pub and a pizzeria serving roman style pizza. This place is open until late, and the entrance fee varies according to the performance. Always crowded and visited by different kind of people.
Dress Code: Unformal, don't dress jacket or tie here!

Romans like taking it easy; and Rome's nightlife may seem rather tame to those accustomed to the cutting-edge buzz of other European cities. A typical night out for Romans usually involves a long dinner with a group of friends, starting after 9pm and continuing until after midnight.
Bars in the centre of town are good places to begin. Most have tables outside where you can sit around and people-watch until the wee hours. There have lately been initiatives aimed at reducing noise by earlier closing hours, but this isn't yet widespread. Campo dei Fiori, the Piazza Navona area, and Trastevere are some of the best places for an evening out. Locals and tourists alike stroll around the streets all evening, or sit at the many welcoming bars, which range from the stylish to the homely. If you want drunken good times, meeting other foreigners and predatory locals, head for one of the hundreds of Irish/Scottish pubs.
For nightclubs - discoteche - the best area to head for is Testaccio. The area around Piramide metro station and spreading down the Via Ostiense contains the highest concentration of nightclubs. In the summer most nightclubs close down, and nightlife relocates to the seaside and to 'villages' around the edge of town. Visitors from the UK and the U.S. will be surprised and maybe shocked at young people's night-time reliance on cars and scooters - and the cavalier attitude to drink-driving. Be prepared for venues surrounded by traffic chaos, which are hard to reach by public transport. Research your transport options; take taxi funds.
