The easiest and fastest way to reach Venice from Rome is to take Rayain flight from Ciampino airport to Treviso airport. Its one hour flight. By train you will atleast need 5 to 6 hours to reach Venice.

last visit i spent 5 hours hanging around airside at Fiumicino terminal B (i was a bit early for my flight, and then it was delayed 3 hours)
anyway, gave me plenty time to explore
the "cafe" type food places both seemed to be a mob scene - decide what you want, then queue to pay, then queue somewhere else to collect...plus lots of delayed flights (ATC having their fun) so very many hungry people; all for a sandwich or a slice of pizza (or both for fat boys like me)
BUT, if you look hard enough you will find a self service restaurant on the 1st floor with decent food; meat veg & potatoes, pasta, risotto, salad....
much better

The cheapest way to fly to Roma is with Ryanair, they also fly nonstop, small airplanes but whit out a doubt the fastest.
Buy a -Priority Boarding ticket:
Passengers who have purchased the service will be given a Priority Boarding Pass when they check-in at the airport and this pass should be presented at the departure gate.
To receive Priority Boarding, passengers need to be at the departure gate at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled flight departure.

as you arrive at the small ciampino airport hope you had a seat on the right hand side of the airport as you see an aerial view of the colliseum and rome as you land...once down quickly through surly customs to antique luggage belts and no trollys so you will struggle to the taxis outside...45 euros to the centre of Rome 40 minutes away. I travelled from east midlands on easyjet which was excellent both flight and airport.

Rome has at least two airports that I know of:
- Fiumicino or Leonardo da Vinci airport for airlines like Alitalia or our carrier Germanwings
- Ciampino for Ryan Air and other carriers.
Do make sure to check out, which airport you will be flying into!

We flew direct to Rome from Manchester aboard Jet2, the Ryanair of the North of England. We enjoyed stupendous views over London, the white cliffs along the English coast, a bird's-eye view of Paris and the sight of the Alps turning pink in the sunset. Jet2 provide an excellent service and an expanding range of destinations from their hubs at Manchester and Leeds/Bradford airports. Fares are competitive and the timings to and from Rome were convenient. If you have flexible dates in mind, you can view a calendar on their website with which you can pinpoint the cheapest fares month by month.
Jet2 flies into Rome's main airport, Fiumicino (also known as Leonardo da Vinci Airport). A train called the Leonardo Express travels non-stop from the airport to Rome's main train station, Termini. It's a bit of a stretch calling it an 'express' because the trip takes 35 minutes and the train trundles along rather slowly. There are two trains an hour in either direction so you should never have to wait for more than half an hour for one. They run daily from about 6am till 11pm. In March 2007 we paid 11 euro each for a single (one-way) ticket which you can purchase from machines on the station. Don't forget to validate them by punching them in the yellow machines you'll see on the platform.
There are more frequent trains which stop at other Rome stations which you may find more convenient for your own destination. There is a bus service too, but it doesn't run very often during the day. Explore your options at www.adr.it/content.asp?L=3&IdMen=731. The website will also explain how to travel between Fiumicino and Rome's other airport, Ciampino.

I used this on my flight, got the perfect seat, here's a blurb on the site:
This site is now becoming quite popular, but if you haven't heard of it, it's a gem. ANYONE that flies should be using this prior to purchasing their tickets. Want the scoop on which seat has the best legroom, which one has limited relince, which one's near a power port for your laptop?

CHECK WITH YOUR HOTEL IF THEY OFFER TRANSFER FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTEL. THERE IS A SERVICE FROM FROM THE HOTEL RESERVATION DESK ON THE AIRPORT CONCOURSE THAT WILL ONLY COST 6 EURO PER PERSON AIRPORT TO HOTEL BUT YOUR HOTEL WILL HAVE TO MAKE YOUR BOOKING. THE HOTELS HEAVILY SUBSIDISE THE COST OF THE JOURNEY SO DON'T USE IT FOR YOUR RETURN TO THE AIRPORT A TAXI CAB WILL BE CHEAPER.

If you use Ciampino airport, a good book is a must for your handluggage. This is one of the most boring airports I have ever visited. There is little or nothing to do, and the seats are sparse and uncomfortable. We didn't try any of the food as we had our own food with us but none of what we saw looked particularly appetising.

One way of getting from Ciampino Airport to the city centre is on the terravision bus. It is available if you are flying with certain airlines (listed on the website) and takes you directly from the airport to Termini for 8 euros. It's not as cheap as getting the ordinary bus/metro but with luggage in tow we found the price difference was worth it. You can book your ticket on at the desk on arrival at the airport by showing proof that you have flown in on one of the selected airlines (boarding card/booking reference). The journey itself takes around 40 minutes, it took us a little longer though because they loaded us on and off three coaches before getting us on the right one - still, gave us a good laugh.
When you arrive at Termini it's possible to get a taxi to your hotel - be careful to get a real taxi though as there are quite a few unscrupulous rip off merchants about. Always agree a price with the driver before getting into the taxi.
