don't arrive at night

If you can help it, unless your hotel is right next to the airport, don't arrive in Rome at night. The reason for this is that the metro stops running at 11:30 pm. Taking a taxi from the airport to central Rome can cost upwards of 150 Euro. I understand there is a bus you can take, but I have no information on it and I wouldn't want to take a Rome bus in any case with luggage. If you don't have some euros with you when you arrive, you'll need to exchange some at the airport. The metro train will cost you 10 Euro per person to take to Rome Termini station.

Getting to Rome

Takeoff, Ryanair

Rome is quite expensive city to visit.
Best to cut down expenses and not over the budget, i went for RYANAIR again.

This is my second time flew by RYANAIR, and only cost me £85 return to Rome Cimapino.

Journey from Liverpool Street Stn. to London Stansted takes about 45 minutes and from the time of departure and arriving in Rome Ciampino was only 2 hours 5 minutes.
It's quite a short journey but it's amazing.

Ryanair is a gift from heaven.
Whatever people say about it , it is safe ,
easy , fast and cheap.
The staf is friendly and efficient...

I know about the snobs... bla bla this , bla bla that.
It is a choise. I like to spend my money on
a fine restaurant instead of....

And no I don't miss the miraculous white
sandwich that doesn't crumbles.
When we arrived there was even a men with
a little yellow car waiting for us and waving
orange flags. Not the best performance I've
ever seen , but the intention was nice. ;-)

Have a look at their website.
In my experience there are always good
connections between the city you are visiting
and the 'alternative' - smaller airport.

For Rome-ciampino you got a few options.
A bus brings you to Termini - 8 euro , and
you can get a return ticket as well for 12 euro.
We chose the 8 euro option.

By public transport you can get a bus to
metro-station Anagnina and get on the A-line.
We chose that option to get back. Cheaper
but it takes a little more time.
(it was the most easy option for us.)

Germanwings

We got our ticket for a real good price: we paid 29 € each way, which summed up to 116 € for two persons return flight Stuttgart to Rome!

We were very satisfied with the security AND the service of Germanwings!!!

Terminal Picture Borrowed from site

Located about 30 minutes away from the city center, Fiumicino is the major international airport hub of Rome. Basically, you can get anywhere and come from anywhere when traveling from or to this airport.

FCO was only built in 1961. Up until that point Ciampino, the other and still functioning airport of Rome, was the city's principal airport. Now, Ciampino has been relagated to mainly domestic and a few international flights.

From Zurich airport you have connections to Rome several times a day. It only takes you about one hour and a half. You may find some special offers if you want to fly with Swiss. I agree, the service isn't as good as it was, but if you only want to fly cheap...
Mostly you arrive at airport Fiumincino. From there you can take the taxi or the train. It takes you about half an hour to the station Termini in the very center of Rome. The tickets are 5 Euros. Not very cheap, but I think much less than the Taxi.

A day on the airport

In the morning when I still could laugh ...

It was the first time I booked a flight with Ryanair. It was supposed to leave at 10.10am on a cold and snowy Tuesday morning. After waiting an hour. It was announced that the flight is cancelled due to some technical problems. The next one was at 7.50pm. So we changed the reservation on the evening plan as well as the flight back. The worst was that we had to kill many many hours on a small airport (Hahn, for me just in the middle of nowhere) where there is nothing to do ....

prepare for strikes

If you have read the intro you will understand we were not amused. When we turned up at the airport to go back home there was a strike going on. All Alitalia flights were cancelled untill 6. Our flight at 5 was the last flight to Amsterdam, so no way to get home and to work the next day. This costed us a vacationday, a hotelroom for one night and an extra trip to the airport (2x 19 Euro).

Italy is famous for its strikes. This was our second italian city, and the second time we were effected by a strike........

Alitalia is a nice airline to fly with though. Just don't fly when we do ;-)))

In August, 2002, we flew with Go to Stansted and from there with Ryanair to Rome. Ryanair fly to Ciampino Airport and have a special coach for their passengers which goes directly to Termini Station. It was ý12 return each and you can probably get cheaper tickets on a local bus but for us this was the most convenient. We arrived around 9.30pm and did not want to be wandering around the airport trying to find which bus to take.

There are very good local buses and an underground metro system. The metro is not really useful for visitors and it is stifling hot down there in the summer.

The best way to get around is by foot and although this can be tiring after a long day of sightseeing, it is really enjoyable. And there are plenty of bars, cafes and gelaterias to stop and take a break in.:o)

Alitalia in the Air

Alitalia was a good airline to wisk you off to Rome. It sets the mood of the country before you arrive. The airline food was Italian and so was the wine.

My favorite part of the flight was watching the flight attendents flirt with the Italian passengers.
