We flew BA into Fiumicino Airport or Leonardo da Vinci Airport to give it its other name. Its a great modern clean airport - the floor shines with reflections! - one of the best i have been in. Easy connections are available into the centre of Rome by a linked railway.

On a trip to Rome from the U.S. you might save money by purchasing a cheap round-trip ticket to London first, and then using the European airfare seller E-Bookers.com to find a cut-rate onward flight to Rome. We would have saved a bundle if we had known this before our trip.

Getting to Rome is easy. You'll most probably fly into Leonardo da Vinci airport in Fiumicino. From there it's a 30-minute ride on the shuttle train to Rome's Termini station. A one-way ticket on the shuttle costs EUR8.80.
Termini station also serves the rest of Italy, so when you plan to go to Rome by train, you will also arrive here.

Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino) airport is 26km (16mi) southwest of the city. One of the most convenient ways to get into town is by the Stazione Termini direct train, which usually runs hourly from the airport.

Use the metro. It is so easy to orientate oneself in it. You buy a ticket, when you first use it, the time is fixed on it, and since that time you may use it not only in metro, but also in buses for 75 minutes. When they are over, you must buy a new one.

There are two airports Leonardo da Vinci and Ciampino.Do look for a cheap flight deal to fly to Rome, there are plenty around.
Taxis are expensive and it is better to get a bus or a train. There are buses and trains available from the 2 airports to the city centre. When you are there ,you can walk or catch buses to sites. Here is the beautiful Trevi fountain.

As soon as I got off the plane i picked up a weekly pass for buses and the metro, then I took the direct train about (45 minutes) to the main station,my hotel was about 300 metres fron train station so it worked out well.

I think the best way to travel to and from Rome is by airplane if you are travelling from abroad. It's the fastest and the easiest.
In our trip we used bus transportation to get distant places. It requires a little patient but anyway it was a good way to get aroud Rome.
