On the square of Spania we find the Barcaccia Fountain, built in 1598 with the order of the Pope Urbano VIII to commemorate the disastrous flood caused by Tevere river in the same year. Its over populated in the tourist season..You can take pictures if you are lucky enough )))
This un is right below the base of the Spanish Steps at Piazza di Spagnia.. you hit it soon after coming out of the metro station at the piazza.
One can spend some time sitting alongside of the fountain as old tourists usually do..they sit an sit.. obviously after seeing the irrelevance of climbing the Spanish Steps and tiring the legs and losing energy
The fountain (Fontana Barcaccia) at the bottom of the Spanish Steps in Piazza di Spagna was designed by Bernini's less famous father, Pietro in 1629, commissioned by Pope Urban VII Barberini. The fountain was built as a memorial of the flooding of the Tiber, whose waters reached the foot of the Pincio.
In the central part of Piazza Spagna (below the Spanish Steps) is this unusual fountain of a sinking boat built in 1623 by Bernini.
Before the river walls on Tiber were built in the end of the 19th century, the river quite often flooded the city. Once, during a terrible flood of 1598, a boat brought on Piazza di Spagna by Tiber, remained here after the water retired. Hence the low Fountain of a Boat was erected here in memory of this.
