by belgianchocolate One of the first fountains 'Bernini' designed. It was pope Urbanus VIII who ordered this masterpiece. Easy to spot his coat of arms. Two crossed keys indicate that he was a pope , the bees are the symbol of the family Barberini. The family Barberini originated of Barberino in the Else valley. They first settled in Florence before coming to Rome. Here they became really wealthy and powerfull. Having a pope in the family helped a lot. 'Triton' is a figure from the greek mythology. He was the son of Poseidon and also served him. Triton is blowing water true the shell... What was new about this fountain is the use of material. Travertine replaced the more common marble here. The dolphins are looking kind of odd seen true our 20th century eyes. Leave a Comment Address: Piazza BarberiniDirections: At the beginning of the Via Veneto. Metro station Barberini

by belgianchocolate Rome has got some fantastic fountains. One of the more recent ones is the 'Fontana delle Naiadi' Piazza delle Republica is the official name of the square. It was completely renovated when Italy became one country. It's basin is by Alessandro Guerrieri. (1901) - four bronze groups of nimphs are laying round the basin. - A nimph of lakes , a nymph of rivers , for the oceans and one for the underground rivers.- The four of them are stuggeling with a mythical animal. (don't believe your book - THAT is not a swan. It's a crane) When the fountain was reveiled , some people were a bit shocked or offended by the explicit erotism. I think it is rome most fantastic fountain. It is in the middle of this spectacular buildings - the remains of the thermen of Diocletianus and on the other side a 19th century arcade with huge statues on top. Of course this square is full of cars - you're in Rome. The fountain is the circular point for the cars. :-) Definitely a must see! Leave a Comment Address: Piazza delle Republica

by belgianchocolate And the winner is... Probably Rome benign fountain is the 'Fontano delle Tartarughe'. The family Mattei decided to cheer up their square a bit and contacted 'Giacomo Della Porta' to design a fountain. It was a Florentine sculpturer who did the job - 'Taddeo Landini.' Four bronze boys sitting on a dolphing , (yes that is a dolphin , take a closer look) , who are spitting water in a marble shell. But it was' Bernini ' who added a hunderd years later the turtles. Tartarugha means turtles. Those or not the original turtles anymore. People tried to steel them a couple of times. The originals can be seen in one of rome's museums. I would have loved to have one... ;-) Leave a Comment Address: piazza MatteiDirections: A verry charming little square... Have a look at the nightlife tips. Not far from the piazza Venezia , near the Jewish quarter.

by belgianchocolate Water is an obvious theme for a fountain... Fontana dei quattro fiumi is the biggest fountain Bernini created. Innocentius X gave instruction to build this impressive fountain. Four enormous figures rise up from the water , they symolize the then known rivers - Nile , Ganges , Donau , Rio de la plata - from the then known 4 continents. Only the horse that symbolizes the Donau is a real sculpture from Bernini. The obelisk on top had to be a baken in the area and has got the popes coat of arms symbol on top. The pigeon is the symbol for the family Pamphili. Personally I've seen some great works from Bernini and this wasn't one of them. In first place the fountain is big.... and he made some amazing sculptures... Read on. Leave a Comment Address: Piazza Navona

by belgianchocolate Fontana dell'Aqua Felice is the official name of this fountain. It is named after Felice Peretti , Pope Sixtus V. He was the first to bring clean water to this area of the city. It was the end of the restored acqua Allessandrina. The fountain contains 3 alcoves with in the middle a huge statue of Mozes. Mozes who as like the story in the bible is beating water out of a rock. That statue is also the reason why you should see this fountain. Just to be able to compare this one with the statue Michelangelo made in the church 'San Pietro in Vincoli'. You can easely see why 'Michelangelo' became famous and 'Prospero Bresciano' didn't. The four lions in the front still bring clear and fresh potable water to the people.. Ideal to fill up you plastic bottle. Leave a Comment Address: Piazza San BernardoDirections: Two interesting churches are near , the 'Santa Maria Della Vitoria' for sure is worth a visit as well. Walk up here from metrastation 'Republica' or 'Barberini'

Fontana delle Tartarughe by Polly74 This is the fountain in Rome that I love most! The splendid fountain known as “the Tortoise” is a magical creation by Giacomo della Porta that admirably combines water, architecture and sculpture. It is also happily inserted into a corner of Rome that has remained more or less the same as when it was built. In 1570 a fountain should have been placed in the nearby ghetto in Piazza Giudia but on the intervention of the Mattei family it was built here in 1581, whilst the ghetto only got its fountain in 1591 (the fountain in piazza Cinque Scole). Four large marble shells rest in the centre of a wide basin with a square base and concave sides, above which are four static bronze ephebes with their foot on the head of a bronze dolphin. The ephebes, all in the same position, raise their arm towards the overhanging marble shell. In the original plans another four bronze dolphins, perhaps the same ones that initially decorated the fountain in Campo de’ Fiori, should have been found where the tortoises are now, but were inserted half way through the 17th century after its first restoration. A Fountain in Rome by myrtle This is one that our tour guide took us to. He said it's his favorite fountain in Rome. We really liked his description of it. He said the fish are supposed to be dolphins because back then they didn't know what dolphins really looked like. Since dolphins are very fast fish, they respresent quickness. The turtles obviously represent slowness. So this fountain symbolizes balance of the man trying to slow down the dolphin & hurry along the turtle. Leave a Comment

Metal deposits have left their mark - this is one that is needing a spring clean ! Leave a Comment Address: Piazza BarberiniDirections: Piazza Barberini, by Barberini on Linea A of the Metroplitana

Rome's love affair with fountains dates back to the city's ancient past. With their mastery of water engineering, the city's water supply was both constant and bounteous - and with suffiicient pressure to power the most sophisticated display fountains. Eleven great aquaducts fed into the city, each terminating at a grand nymphaeum - a richly ornamented fountain from whence subsidiary water lines fed public and private supplies. With the fall of Rome, the water system fell into decay and only a few fragments remain to remind us of the magnificence of these early fountains. It was to be another thousand years before the city was again adorned with beautiful fountains to equal those of the past. Now there are hundred of them, of all shapes and sizes, as symbolic of the city as the ruins of the past, the countless churches and the sentinel pines. All fountains have their own beauty, but some are definitely more beautiful than others and warrant seeking out especially. The Turtle Fountain on Piazza Mattei in the Jewish Ghetto area is one that takes a little searching for but, oh, is it worth it! Completed in 1585 to a design by Giacomo della Porta, though the turtles that give it its name were an addition by Bernini a hundred years later, it is just so lovely - the more so because the square it graces is a small and intimate space. Piazza Navona is anything but small and intimate, it's big enough to have three fountains. Unfortunately, the central one - Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers - was under wraps as it is being restored, all we could see was its obelisk sticking up above the hoarding, but at the south end of the piazza, the Fountain of the Moor (another della Porta/Bernini combination - Bernini added the "Moor" to the centre of the fountain when it was restored in 1654) is quite splendid despite the original tritons surrounding Bernini's Moor being removed to the Villa Borghese and being replaced with 19th century copies. The piazza's third fountain - the Neptune - is a 19th century creation. You take your life in your hands trying to get up close to the Triton Fountain in Piazza Barberini - this piazza is definitely not a traffic-free zone. Be brave - the fountain's gorgeous, another Bernini masterpiece - his first in the city, created in 1643 to mark the restoration of the ancient Aqua Felice aqueduct. It may not be a Baroque masterpiece, but the Fountain of the Naiads in Piazza Repubblica, caused an uproar in the city when it was unveiled in 1901. The naiads were totally naked! and they were recognised identities - actresses!! and, true to the Art Nouveau aesthetic of the time, they were so sinuous, and playful, and downright sexy. What a scandal! The good citizens of Rome were appalled, the local lads loved them and carriages circling the fountain were a traffic hazard. Should they be removed? Art won over prudery and the sculptures stayed. This is not the nicest piazza in Rome, and the fountain's no masterpiece, but do take a moment to check out the girls in their watery playground. Fontana delle Api on Piazza Barberini by martin_nl Another work by Bernini can also be found on Piazza Barberini. It's a small fountain dedicated to the bee's, the symbol of the Barberini, situated on a corner of the piazza and is easily overlooked. The Latin writing's on the fountain say that the water is there for the people and their pets. Leave a Comment Address: Piazza BarberiniDirections: Take the metro to Piazza Barberini.
