    La Pieta by Michelangelo

by Frisbeeace Updated Oct 30, 2003
    La Pieta by Michelangelo

Michelangelo produced the marble Pietà by 1498-1500 which is still in its original place in Saint Peter's Basilica. La Pietà was probably finished before Michelangelo was 25 years old, and it is the only work he ever signed. Mary is shown seated and holding the dead Christ across her lap.

Again, try to visit the church early in the mornings when it is less crowdy. At 9.30 am we were almost alone in front of La Pieta but a few days later in the afternoon it was packed and no way to come close or take a picture.

    La pieta'

Another important stop while visiting the Vatican, this sculpture radiates feelings and a fine expressivity in every part of it...
