This is a beautiful bridge to walk across & a must see on your way to the Vatican. If you take the Vatican Tour with Romeing Tours they will take you to the Vatican through this way. It is truly a beautiful site.
Moving forward a bit, we catch a glimpe of a Rome which had missed out a bit on the Renaissance. Yes, Michelangelo did his bit in the Sistine Chapel, but Rome was well behind places like Florence, Bologna, Siena, and Venice.
Actually, it worked out quite nicely for Rome. With the benefit of funding from Catholic Spain and Portugal and their American colonies, the papacy funded a remarkable building boom that epitomized the Baroque period.
Bernini is Baroque Rome's master sculptor. You really can't walk more than a block without seeing one of his great creations: a beauiful sculpture or fountain in the midst of a busy piazza. In this case, Bernini has arranged angelic sculptures across the bridge leading from the heart of Rome to the Vatican. It's an effect similar to the Charles Bridge in Prague.
A bridge has stood on this spot since before the time of St Gregory, who led a profession of pilgrims over the predecessor of the modern bridge to ask deliverance from a plague in the 6th century. Today, Bernini's statues conduct the modern pilgrim.
CASTEL SAN ANGELO certainly isnt the biggest attraction in ROME but the entry bridge accross the Tiber river is both fascinating and has a number of impressive statues lining the balestrades on either side.
Pont Sant'Angelo is a pedestrian bridge adorned with statues of saints Peter and Paul and 10 angels sculpted by Bernini and his students. It spans the Tiber River and leads to the Castel Sant'Angelo.
Beautiful bridge across the Tiber, close to the Castel Sant'Angelo, decorated with 10 angels, thronging with street sellers and tourists alike but is worth the hassle to cross it.
The bridge over the Tiber to the Castle is a fascinating piece of work. Built back in the dark ages it is the oldest bridge over the Tiber.
I love these angel statues along this bridge that leads to Castel Sant'Angelo. Stop and look at them. They are so well done and each angel is different.
One of the more beautiful bridges of Rome this bridge crosses the Tiber to the Castel Sant'Angelo. It is flanked by angels carved by Bernini, each depicting an element of Christ's crucifixion.
Probably the prettiest bridge in Rome, the Sant'Angelo Bridge leads directly to the front of Castel Sant'Angelo. The angels lining the bridge are by Bernini.
Higher pavements erected along both sides of the famous bridge make it possible to reach Castel Sant'Angelo on foot.
