Huge church on an impressive square and just around the corner from home for us. Looks like a popular place to meet too.
The lavish coffered ceiling inside the basilica is Renaissance whilst the facades, domes and chapels are Baroque. At the apse is the "Coronation of the Virgin" 13th century mosaic by Jacopo Torriti.
In 1611 a bronze of the Virgin and Child was added to this ancient marble column which came from the Basilica of Constantine.
This church was built in the 5th century and added to during the 18th century. It is one of Romes patriarchal churches.
Be sure to see the mosaics that abound in the nave and aisles.
One of the great Roman basilicas, situated off Via Cavour . Nearest metro station is Cavour.
So many churches and even more treasures... Have a look at the Travelogue for some examples. Here's the statue of Mary and the baby Jesus in front of the Santa Maria Maggiore.
The Cesi and Sforza chapels date from the late 16th century and greet you directly from the left aisle when you enter.
One of the greatest Roman churches, amazing interiors (page under reconstruction, more about SMM soon...)
