Tourists are drawn here primarily to view Michelangelo's powerful Christ with the Cross marble statue (detail in next tip) standing to the left of the main alter. Behind this simple façade bearing the coat of arms of Pius V you will find one of the most interesting churches of Rome including exceptional works from the end of the 13th centur to the 19th century, when the building underwent a radical restoration. The Aldobrandini Chapel is home to Bernini's Catherine of Siena, patron saint of Italy and a superb cycle of frescoes by Filippino Lippi are vivid. Photo 1 - Five Pontiffs are buried here, including Paulus IV whose coat of arms you can see only in this church, because when he died the Romans destroyed all signs of his pontificate. Works of Bernini are in abundance here - the Monument to Giovanni Vigevano is a very early work by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The academic structure of the bust is broken by the hand which adds energy to the determined look of the represented character. Photo 2 -The organ over the portal is stunning and not to be missed - most likely, I would not have looked up as I approached the exit had I not caught the upward gaze of a few others. Photo 3 - A later work by Bernini - the marble "drapery" funeral monument to Sister Maria Raggi is a stunning match between polychroma marble and metal items sparkling with gold gilding. As part of the Monument to Cardinal Pimentel you will see Charity by Antonio Raggi of Como, who worked for Bernini. He is regarded as the best follower of Bernini's style Address: Piazza MinervaDirections: southeast of the Pantheon - look for the elephant supporting the little oblisk

Three views of Michelangelo's Christ and the Cross to the left of the center alter in Church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva (next tip). This statue was originally carved as a nude and the gold drape was added later. Address: Church Santa Maria Sopra MinervaDirections: Piazza Minerva

The Elefantino and Sta Maria by melissa_bel This church is located on Piazza della Minerva, 5 minutes away from the Pantheon. There is a sculpture by Bernini (again) of a small elephant supporting an obelisk (another one). One of the cutest and most surprising of Bernini's sculptures. Santa Maria is built on the site of a Roman temple wrongly attributed to Minerva, goddess of wisdom. You can visit the crypt where the ruins are for a small fee. Built by the Dominicans in the earkly 13th century, it is the only gothic style church in Rome (although the facade has been rebuilt i the 19th century), it is complete with the typical gothic stained glass window. The ceiling painted in night blue with golden stars gives it a mystical vibe. It is also the home of one of Michelangelo’s earliest works. A sculpture of Jesus Christ the redeemer who is represented with his cross. The remains of St-Catherine of Sienna, one of Christianity's most fanous saint, are also here. Look in the Carafa Chapel and you'll find a beautiful fresco representing the life of St-Thomas Aquinas. And talking of painting, Fra Angelico is also buried there. The elephant as a basis of the obelisk. by chiara76 One of the most interesting medieval churches in Rome. There are few graves of famous people there like the grave of Sain Catharina from Siena and friar and artis Fra Angelico. In the front of the church there is the old obelisk and the basis of it was designed by Bernini. The elephant as a basis symbolizes the real Christian Wisdom as a elephant is a symbol of the intelligence and faithfulness. Egyptian Obelisk by rexvaughan Santa Maria Sopra Minerva is the only Gothic church in Rome, but you have to go inside to appreciate it. It is very unimposing from the outside, but a magnificent place inside. It was built in the 8th C over the ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva. It has several distinctions apart from its beauty. The obelisk in the photo is a 6th C Egyptian one which is mounted on a Bernini elephant and topped with a cross. I am always glad to see these ancient works preserved (even though they were doubtless acquired by devious and/or violent means) but I wish they wouldn't feel like they have to baptise them all with a cross. Also, inside the church is a Michelangelo statue of Christ, a Fra Lippo Lippi fresco of scenes from the life of St. Thomas Aquinas and the body of St. Catherine of Siena. by Julius_Caesar Dating from the 13th century, S.Maria Sopra Minerva is the only example of gothic church in Rome, and underwent changes during 15th-17th centuries by Renaissance artists from Venice and Florence and by Baroque roman artists. It cointains also many tombs, including those of St. Catherine da Siena, the humanist Pietro Bembo and the friar painter Fra Angelico. Interior of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva by martin_nl There are not many churches that have so much and interesting Italian art as the Santa Maria sopra Minerva. Too bad the church was closing when we visited, so we couldn't walk around in the church. I love the blue ceiling though. It is really like the sky outside, but without the angels. Right behind the Pantheon you will come across the church of Santa Maria Sopra MInerva. It is a 13th century church supposedly built on the ancient ruins of the Temple of Minerva. The facade is rather unadorned, but wait till you step inside!! Among the beautiful statues you will find the tomb of St. Catherine of Siena on the main altar. The painter Fra Angelico is also buried here, along with other famous Italians. Also if you are noting all the obelisks in Rome, you will like the one in front of the church, which is of an elephant supporting an Egyptian obelisk. A must see! Facade and Pulcino by jungles This church doesn't get that much attention as its plain facade doesn't make it look very appealing from the outside. Usually the most people do is stop to admire the elephant and obelisk outside and then move on without even entering the church. Those who do venture in, though, are in for a real treat. The interior, with its high vaulted ceiling painted blue and covered in stars, looks like it would be much more at home in Paris than in Rome. In fact, it is Rome's only gothic church. The name means 'St. Mary on top of Minerva,' because like many churches it was built on top of an ancient pagan temple, this one dedicated to the goddess Minerva. St. Catherine of Siena died in the adjacent convent and is buried here (except for her head which is in Siena); there is a reclining statue of her that adorns her tomb just underneath the main altar. One of Michelangelo's sculptures, Christ the Redeemer, is also here to your left as you face the altar. This is not one of his more highly regarded works; it was rather poorly completed by one of his students, and the bronze sash was added later to cover Christ's indecent exposure. Open all day from 8am to 7pm; visits not permitted during mass. The official website is only in Italian but has lots of pictures for those who don't speak Italian. Directions: When facing the Pantheon, take the road that runs along the left side of it. The church will be on your left near the back of the Pantheon.Website: http://www.basilicaminerva.it/home.htm Other Contact: Giovanni.Monti@agora.it

Elephant carrying obelisk by jungles This obelisk is the smallest of the thirteen in Rome, but it's still a pretty heavy load for the little elephant holding it up. The elephant was designed by the famous Baroque sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini. He was inspired by a 15th century novel called Poliphilo's Dream of the Strife of Love in which the main character meets an elephant made of stone carrying an obelisk. The statue was given the nickname Porcino (Piggy), eventually transformed to Pulcino, which in the Roman dialect means 'chick.' The obelisk was found in 1655 in the garden of the Dominican convent that adjoins the church; it was erected on the elephant base in 1667. For more information on Rome's obelisks, see my obelisk tip under St. John in Lateran.
