When you're visiting Rome, be sure NOT to miss Vatican city! It's one of the most incredible places I've been to! We took the underground to Vatican city and of course it was full of people, even more than full.. But the beauty of the art for example in architecture and museums we saw there, replaced all the painful underground journey! The frescos, the Sicstine chapel, the art..... It took us several hours to see all the museums had to offer but it was definitely worth it! At the end of the visit, we climbed to the top of he St. Peter's churh (don't even consider using the elevator, CLIMB all the way, it's actually fun!). The landscape was incredible and the cool air breeze was really something after the sweaty climbing! Leave a Comment

You can climb the stairs to get here or take the elevator. I climb the stairs. It was weird. The steps were shaped around the dome, so you're going in circle and leaning at the same time. Once you get on top, the view is breathtaking. Eventually, what goes up, must come down. Leave a Comment

You can go half-way by lift, then walk the rest. Views are fantastic - you can spot most of the Rome landmarks (if you recognise the spires) on a clear day, and of course, there's a great view over St Peter's square (which, ironically, is round). a visit to rome would not be complete with out seeing st. peter's basilica and vatican city. the original basilica was built on the site of the martyrdom of st. peter and was called basilica beato petro apostolo. the construction of the basilica was ordered by emperor constantine and was completed in 340AD. pope julius II ordered the construction of a new basilica in 1506 and it was completed in 1665. most of the great architects and artists of the roman renaissance period made contributions to this magnificent building. st. peter's is one of the most ornate christian churches in the world. to take in all of the attractions and museums of vatican city you need to alocate a full day. located in the center of st. peter's is bernini's baldacchino and the papal altar. this baroque canopy is supported by four massive piers. this impressive canopy was comissioned by pope urban VIII in 1624. under the canopy is the papal altar. only the pope can celebrate mass here. under the papal altar is the tomb of st. peter. it is believed that his body is buried here. located in the lower level of the cathedral is the tomb of pope john paul II. this simple marble slab is quite a contrast to the ornate carved tombs of most of the previous popes. the symbolism is that john paul II wanted to be remembered as a simple man. located to the right when you enter st. peter's is michelangelo's famous scuplture "the pieta". this sculpture of mary and the dead jesus was finished in 1499. a deranged person damaged the statue in 1972 and since then it is protected by a glass wall. admission to the main church of st. peter's is free.
