Across the river Tiber is the Trastevere area. The people living here see themselves as the real Romans. The area is not very glamourous though. Small and winding streets hide some nice churches.
In the picture the main church of the area, the Santa Maria in Trastevere.

Walking by this piece of Rome is, appart from an exercise of orientation, a pleasure. Narrow winding streets, easy small village life, and a lot of trattorias (familiar restaurants) are smell in the air. Actually, not very different from the area of Campo de Fiori...

The church is dedicated to St Cecilia, 2nd century Roman martyr and patron of musicians. It contains a statue of the saint's body as well as some Cavallini frescoes. It is possible to see the excavations and the crypt for a fee.
The area has large buildings once used as convents and streets with many cafés, restaurants and pizzerias. It is more a residential district compared to other neighborhoods more tourist oriented.

Address: 22 Piazza di Santa Cecilia
A cloistered and still-functioning convent with a fine garden, Santa Cecilia contains The Last Judgment, by Pietro Cavallini (c. 1293), a masterpiece of Roman medieval painting. Another treasure is a late-13th-century baldachino by Arnolfo di Cambio over the altar. The church is built on the reputed site of Cecilia's long-ago palace, and for a small fee you can descend under the church to inspect the ruins of some Roman houses as well as peer through a gate at the stuccoed grotto beneath the altar. Open: Main church and excavations daily 8am-noon and 3-7pm; frescoes Tues and Thurs 10-11:30am, Sun 11:30am-noon. Church free admission; Cavallini frescoes 1.55€; excavations 1.55€.

Trastevere is also an ideal place for a stroll on a warm summer's night . It always leads you to a charming piazza, or to a nice restaurant, or to the Chiesa of Santa Maria in Trastevere.-
Trastevere is full of open air restaurants and it´s full of tourist all the day long.-
If you go to have dinner, hurry up with your meal, because the waiters are not nice and they´re strict as regards time. When you finish your meal, waiters make you feel you have to leave. Very unkind!

It was on this spot in 38BC that a fountain of oil flowed for a whole day. A more simple basilica compared to the others in Rome, yet still lovely. The Trastevere area is a must see just because it is more like Roman life today, so since you are there take a peek inside this church. It has nice paintings and sculptures inside. A 10-20 minute look is good enough.

Trastevere isn't so much of a must see tourist spot - it's more of a must see neighborhood. Strolling through the tiny streets and finding a delicious little hole in the wall restaurant. In Piazza San Egidio you will find the Museo del Folklore, which owns a collection of 27 paintings by Ettore Roesler Franz (see my travelogue for some of his paintings).

Trastevere didnt live up to our expectations, its like most of Rome, maybe because we went on a Sunday, looking for Via del Moro and a friend's insistent recommendation on eating at Mario's, which unfortunately shut down.
However, the best ice cream we had in Rome was in a small shop while walking to the church - I think Santa Maria.....I had Frutti Di Bosco which was divine and delicious, Via del Moro also has a tiny shops selling homemade chocolate which everyone must buy even though its a little expensive.
Diagonally opposite the chocolate shop there is a small cafe with only 2 benches which has the best pizza and calzone we ate during our stay

Rome is full of museums, therefore museum's lovers won't be dissapointed. To get a full picture of the cultural things to do in Rome, get a good Guide, i bought 'Let's Go Rome' which was quite helpful.
I'd like to concentrate on what you don't find in travel books. Trastevere is my favorite area. It seems like you are visiting a small 19th century Italian village. Small streets are filled up with very cheap family-runned restaurants.
Although people may stare at you at the beggining, if you show the locals you love Trastevere, they will consider you like a friend and they will probably invite you for a meal.
Piazza Navona is really not worth it. It takes ages to find it and when you find the piazza, you are more that dissapointed. You can find way more interesting piazzas in Rome that this one, although being very famous, Piazza Navona is boring and the restaurants close to it are really expensive (for a bad quality food).
