You will not find any other place in the world that celebrates the ever-mutating and incredible power of water like Rome. The Trevi Fountain is a fantastic work of art that is much more than a mere sculpture. This triumphant example of Baroque art with its soft, natural lines and fantasy creatures embodies movement as the soul of the world. The fountain is a true wonder, a jewel of water and stone that is nestled between the palaces of the historic centre of the city.

You can already hear its presence from the nearby streets. Indeed, as you get nearer the sound of its gushing waters grows constantly more intense, reaching a crescendo in the square, where you will find the most breathtaking sight. Suddenly, the space seems to open out and you stand before a symbolic representation of this great force of nature, a tumultuous spring that seems to flow out of the ground.

This unique statue has an ancient history. Its origins go back to Roman times and it was the terminal point of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct commissioned by Augustus, which was used to provide water for the thermal baths. The water that flows here has two names: Virgin Waters and Trevi. The first refers to an ancient legend about a young Roman girl who showed the source of the spring to some thirsty soldiers; whereas Trevi derives from the old name for the area, which was originally called Trebium.

The aqueduct continued to function, even though it was necessary to wait until the eighteenth century when Pope Clement XII decided to restore the Trevi district and began work on the fountain we know today. It took three centuries to complete and is often attributed to Bernini, but for the most part it is the work of the Roman architect, Nicola Salvi, who took twenty years to complete it.

Petty Thieves fleecing the Trevi Fountain
1 more image

So you think that throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain will ensure your return to beautiful Rome? No it only ensures that Petty Thieves (such as those pictured) can fish out your coins when the police change shifts........and they did so in front of hundreds of confused tourists!

SO MY ADVICE- THROW YOUR COIN IN AS FAR AS POSSIBLE- SO THESE PETTY INDIVIDUALS CAN'T FISH OUT YOUR COIN. (Coins generally go to charity and to continue to maintain the beautiful fountain- so thee guys are the lowest of the low!)

The most beautiful fountain that I have ever seen in my life! It was really a wonderful moment when we found this amazing fountain and its statues. Our tired bodies got an immediate relieve that evening. I suggest that you also go there in the evening on the summer when the sun is warm. You can sit around and enjoy the cool breeze after a long walk around Rome. "Throwing a coin to the fountain will bring you back here!", said a friend of us when we saw people were tossing coins over their shoulder with their back to the fountain. I tossed a coin and it went deep into the water... Rome... someday I will come again here!

The Trevi Fountain - Fontana di Trevi

The Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain is the largest — standing 25.9 meters high and 19.8 meters wide — and most ambitious of the Baroque fountains of Rome. It is located in the rione of Trevi.

The fountain at the juncture of three roads (tre vie - three ways) marks the terminal point of the "modern" Acqua Vergine, the revivified Aqua Virgo, one of the ancient aqueducts that supplied water to ancient Rome.
In 19 BC, supposedly with the help of a virgin, Roman technicians located a source of pure water some 20 km from the city. This scene is presented on the present fountain's facade.

A traditional legend holds that if visitors throw a coin into the fountain, they are ensured a return to Rome.
Among those who are unaware that the "three coins" of Three Coins in the Fountain were thrown by three different individuals, a reported current interpretation is that two coins will ensure a marriage will occur soon, while three coins leads to a divorce. A reported current version of this legend is that it is lucky to throw three coins with one's right hand over one's left shoulder into the Trevi Fountain.
Approximately 3,000 Euros are thrown into the fountain each day and are collected at night. The money has been used to subsidize a supermarket for Rome's needy. However, there are regular attempts to steal coins from the fountain, including some using a magnetized pole.

I like this fountain, it is gorgeous and beautiful.
Of course there are very much people all time, but when you be in Rome, you must to see it certainly ... and maybe throw you coins ;)

Do as everyone else does and see the Trevei Fountain. It is just as spectacular as people say. The best time to enjoy it would be early in the morning, unless you like weaving through hordes of people trying to toss a coin over their shoulder.

Fontana di Trevi

If you don't visit Fontana di Trevi while you are in Rome, you just miss the first must-do. This beautiful fountain is a tourist magnet not only because of the fantastic architecture, but also for the story about it. You will see people turning their back to the fountain and throwing coins. The first coin you throw is for finding love and the second is for returning back to Rome for another visit. It is so lively with the tourist crowd there, but still you can enjoy your visit whether it is during the day or night. If you are looking for a good spot, try the stair ramp where you can lie down and watch the fountain and the people.

Mr. Veltroni (Major of Rome) had a great idea to refrain tourists from drinking the water at Trevi Fountain. Recent test has proved that water carried by the Virgin Aqueduct is highly polluted. He is really a great smart guy and we need him to lead our country towards a brighter future. He will be our next new Prime Minister!!

Is this fountain called Trevor? - 2004

Don't skip the Trevi and have a bevvy

I came upon this by accident. I wandered into this very small square, and there was this huge fountain! No way you can stand back far enough to get the whole thing.
Chokka with people!
A woman behind me from Georgia (t-shirt and accent) flicked her map and asked her friend - Is this fountain called Trevor?
There are a lot of fountains in Rome and each time I saw one I would wonder if it was the Trevi.
But once you see the Trevi you know they weren't it.
This is just it.
Rome does this to you. It does monumentally huge and beautiful with a nonchalant air.
Oh this? I've got plenty more like this.
By the way, I defied superstition, and did not throw coins into the fountain.
Yet I returned to Rome two weeks later without a hitch.
I expect it only works if you believe in it.

Get in line, throw a coin and move on.......

This is the protocol for how you handle your whirlwind visit to Trevi Fountain, it is a complete madhouse no matter what time of year or day. Throngs of people clog up what I'm sure is a beautiful fountain and make it very difficult to get a decent picture. However be patient eventually you will get a chance to take a picture, and preform the coin ritual. It is said if you throw a coin over your right shoulder into the fountain you will return to Rome! So far its been true for me going on three times. What a lot of people don't know is that after you throw the coin in the fountain listen closely and you may be lucky enough to hear the fountain whisper back to you, "Thank you. Come again!"

The Trevi Fountain is not only the largest and perhaps most ambitious fountain in Rome, it’s also one of the city’s biggest tourist attractions. Heaving with tourists and vendors, I was rather underwhelmed by the fountain but it is worth at least a quick look. The best time to visit is probably at night when the fountain is lit up.
