Know about this?
when ordering an espresso, etc., DON'T SIT DOWN
i ordered an espresso at a cafe just outside the basilica and was charged $7 because i sat at a table. you can avoid this by always standing at the bar to drink the coffee, like everyone else. i was clueless and had to learn the hard way. i think the real price is around 2 euros.
Avoid to buy food and drinks from the mobile beverage stands. These are badly overprized and I do not see a good reason to support such business and to waste travel budget.
Bring your stuff with you, eat somewhere else.
I remember the price for a small bottle of ice tea for 3.80 EUR in the city center. I monitored that price in the summer 2009.
I must admit, I have been a customer of such a stand because it was soo hot.
Fun Alternatives: People drink from the 100.000 public fountains but be advised that this is not always drinking water.

Different prices to drink inside or outside
Beware when you sit down at an outside table at a bar for a nice beer or glass of wine. The prices are different if you sit inside (less expensive) or outside where you can see and be seen. My husband and I actually paid 6 euros apiece for a beer because we chose to sit at an outside table.
Unique Suggestions: Look for the prezzo listo which is supposed to be prominently displayed, only sometimes the list will be inside while you're outside!

Enjoying your coffee
Although this probably does not count as a tourist trap, it is still good to know about it . If you feel like a quick cup of coffee and want to save money, then stand at the counter. Thats what the romans do , stand and knock it back. It will cost you less than half the price.

Hm... can´t tell where it was,...
Hm... can?t tell where it was, but don't go spending 4 Euros per hour in an internet cafe, I have found one for 1 Euro per half hour, but you will have to search.
If anyone offers Vatikan-Euros to you, just ignore them. To 99% they are fakes.
In the cafes in Rome the price of food and drink doubles or tripples by taking a seat. NO JOKE!!!
Consuming your coffee standing is cheaper!

When you get a drink at a bar...
When you get a drink at a bar if you sit down the price will be exactely twice as much. You know it, it's the rule, so don't get upset and pay up! Bars are charged a very high tax to place chairs and tables on the public streets, so they have to make that money back somehow, don't you think? See what the price whad be at the counter, then dubble it, it's that simple. They are not doing anything illegal, and most of all they are not ripping you off. Just make sure you get a receipt for the ammount you pay. Don't accept a hand written receipt; a bar MUST provide you with a full legal receipt from the till. You could be fines up to 50 Euros for not having one, even after you left the bar, and untill you are at more than 150 meters away from the bar. So make sure you get a receipt wherever you spend money, yes even at markets they have tills.
