Fiumicino Terminal Number System

FCO Map terminal numbering system

The ADR has RE-Numbered all the terminals at FCO. And somehow they’ve made it more confusing than before...........

On the night of 10/24 a small “army” of engineers and workers took to the field to change the signs of the terminal, roads, car parks and in all areas open to the public.
The change in signage was designed both to rationalize the existing situation and to realign the signs to the situation as regards the designation of the Terminal, the big international airports. The new nomenclature of reference for the system of the terminals has been determined:
Terminal A is renamed Terminal 1 (T1)
Terminal AA is renamed Terminal 2 (T2)
Terminals B and C (now merged) are renamed Terminal 3 (T3)
Terminal subsidiary sensitive flight is confirmed Terminal 5 (T5)

If you have entered Italy through FCO customs before, you will now be entering from customs into TERMINAL 3. Everyone on your flight exits the same way, so just follow the stampede. Continue directly ahead to the street exit. If you are taking the Leonardo Expess, cross the street - look up to your left and you will see what looks like a white glass overpass. There is the train platform for the Leonardo Express - it is very well marked.

Leonardo Express direct train service runs every 30 minutes to Rome's central rail station (Stazione Termini; www.trenitalia.com) between 6:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. That service costs 11€ and tickets must be stamped before you board the trains on the platform's validating machines.

Leonardo Express

The Leonardo Express departs from Termini in Rome for Fiumicino Airport every 30 minutes and the journey takes 30 minutes. Likewise, trains depart from Fiumicino for Rome every 30 minutes. A single ticket costs 8.50 euros. This is the most economical way of getting to Fiumicino Airport which would otherwise cost 40 euros in a taxi.

However, please give ample time to get to the platform. The Leonardo Express departs from platform 25 which is a good 10 minute walk from the main entrance of Termini Station. I have seen so many travellers running for their lives with their luggage to the platform.

Inside the train
1 more image

The trains run non stop between Fiumicino Airport & Roma Termini railway station providing some 24000 seats per day. The train has large spaces for the luggage & the carriages are air conditioned. Trains run from approx 6 am to 23 pm daily. They leave the airport at 5 mins & 35 mins past the hour. They leave platform 25 at Termini at 22 mins & 52 mins past the hour. Journey time is just over 30 mins.

It can be quite crowded as you board the train & steps up to the carriage quite steep. A friendly stranger who's already boarded may take your luggage & lift it on to the train for you. Once you've boarded the same friendly stranger will demand some Euros as payment & become agressive if you don't pay.

One way tickets cost 11 Euros and can be bought at self service machines at the airport & railway station. These machines have instructions in various languages & take Euros or credit cards. Remember to validate the ticket by getting it stamped in one of the many yellow machines found on the platform.

Leonardo Express: Fuimicino Airport to City Center

Train Station of Fuimicino Airport: Me on 2nd Left
2 more images

When you arrive at Fuimicino Airport (FCO), which is actually outside the main Rome, you may choose to take express train to the city centre, known as Roma Termini Station. It is recommended to keep your accomodation near Termini, specially when you are on a short trip, to synergize your cost and time. The express train, aesthetically called Leonardo Express, runs every 30 minutes and 24 hours, is the most famous and effective means of transportation to reach to the Termini from FCO unless you have specific reasons or your accomodation is far from Termini. Once you are done with your luggage, just follow the train sign until you end up to a platform. It will be a 10-15 minutes walk with couple of escalators in your way. Don't forget to pick the city map and other useful information from the Tourist Information Centre before you reach to the platform. One way ticket will cost you 11 euros, which is a bit expensive, specially to people on tight budget like me. To assuage the welcome brunt a bit, ask for the carnet of 10 which will cost you 85 euros, a saving of 2.5 euros per ticket. Oh, but you won't need 10 tickets, would you? So, be smart like us, sell the deal to other travellers, it looks silly, but believe me it will take you not more than 5 minutes to have more than 10 people ready join in your deal. And here you come to know that most of the people are on budget like you! After all, you can have a cup or cone of gelato from outside of the Termini from your saving! A win-win deal for everyone and gelato is free! And don't worry about your luggage, Leonardo Express has enough capacity to take your luggage to the destination without much hassle. Happy Roming!

Avoid taxi "ROME-SHUTTLE" Ciampino-Civitavecchia!

Taxi "ROME-SHUTTLE" from Ciampino to Civitavecchia - An experience to pass on...
Reserved a taxi for 4 adults + luggage to make a round trip from the Ciampino airport to the port of Civitavecchia (where the cruises depart) with the company ROME-SHUTTLE (negotiated 235 euros); they have a web site: http: // www.rome-shuttle.com/
They never came!!! And when we called them, the woman answered that we never reserved a taxi !!!
Unfortunately, I gave my VISA card number to make the reservation and I’m afraid that this company use my card...
What shall I do?
Other info: we easily caught a taxi from the airport, and the prices are cheaper than those practised by the taxi companies found on internet: 100 to 120 euros one way (I made 5 quotations before leaving: the prices varies from 130 to 180 euros one way).

Taxi "ROME-SHUTTLE" Ciampino a Civitavecchia

Coach timetable

I flew into Rome Ciampino Airport, which is where most of the cheap airlines fly to. Then it was a simple job of getting a return coach ticket to the Termini Stazione for about 8 Euros.

The coach journey takes about 40 minutes in decent traffic so remember to give yourselves plenty of time to get back to the airport, unless you want to do what I did which was arrive at the airport 5 minutes before departure and the run through security and up to the gate. Fortunately the airport is not all that big and also my flight had been delayed by half an hour.

I've used this company about 8 times and wanted to share them with others. I have used the E-Class Benz car service to and from the airport for 50 Euro. This is for 1 or 2 persons and also used the Van when there were 4 of us.

Thyy have excellent prices and I like their service too!

There are express trains from the airport to the central train station in Rome. I have taken it before. Once there you can catch the subway or a bus to go anywhere you need to go. The subway is limited in scope but the busses are quite dependable and cheap. You can get just about anywhere you need to go by city bus.

Airport Transfer - RomeCabs
monica71 profile photo

3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

monica71 472 reviews

I did a lot of reading prior to our vacation and decided to hire a taxi to get us from the airport to our apartment and back. We really did not want to deal with public transportation after a 10 hours plus trip from Chicago to Rome.
We hired Rome Cabs to take care of our round trip transfer and we could not be happier for doing it. We paid 45 Euros for each transfer (all the private transfers start from 45 Euros and up).

My communication with Stefano, the company owner, was flawless. I got prompt answers to all my emails and he answered all my questions and concerns. You have to email him the flight information, so they can monitor the flight (just in case there are flight delays) and make sure somebody is waiting for you at the airport when you arrive. The payment is cash only, done after you are being dropped off at your final destination.

When we arrived in Rome, our cab driver was waiting for us at the airport, holding a sign with our names on it. Since our apartment was not ready for us until 10:30am, she took us on a one hour free ride around the city, pointing out the main attractions. On the day we left Rome, the driver came to our apartment and picked us up from there right on time.

Also transported

We used a company called Easy-Shuttle to get from Rome airport to our hotel, which was quite a drive outside the city (42 kilometers). The price was reasonable - EUR 55 for two - and the driver was waiting at the airport holding a sign with our name on it. Believe me, that can be reassuring when you step off the plane into a foreign country and you don't really know your way around.

Now, I like a bargain as much as the next person. and the idea of taking the airport bus or getting on the train to save a buck is always tempting, but you have to weigh the options. If your hotel is tucked away in some residential neighborhood or on the outskirts of Rome, you will probably need another bus/taxi/tram/subway to get where you are going. So do the math. The final tally may not be much higher.

A shuttle takes you straight to the door and saves you sore arms from dragging your luggage up and down flights of stairs, and across Rome's cobblestone streets. Better save your strength for later. You will need it. Don't believe the guidebooks that say Rome is small and easy to navigate. They are pulling your leg (and your leg muscles).

On the way back, we called the driver himself, Serafino, who speaks some English (speak slowly). He has his own fleet of cars. His number is 3479417380 or 3398965580. You can bargain with him (up to a point).
