I bought a 7 day transporation pass for the bus and the train, it is a life-saver because you do not have to validate it each time you get on the bus or the tain. Be aware, the subway is dirty in Rome, it is better to take the bus. First thing in Rome is ... do yourself a favor ... buy a bus map, it costs about 6 Euroupe dollars, but it is worthy, so you will not be lost all the time in Rome.

Take the Leonardo Express train from the airport to Rome, it costs 11 Euroupe dollar per person. And remember validate the ticket at the yellow box, or you will be fined. They actually check the tickets on the train.

To read a bus sign in Rome, the name on the top is the where the bus originated, the one circled means the bus stop you are standing at the moment, and the bottom name is where the bus is headed to. Do'nt confuse them, or you will end up like us, we had all these unnecessary trips to everwhere and we ended up seeing everything in Rome, which is not a bad thing, if you have the time.

Local people do not speak English, be prepared for it.

    Have fun in Rome,

  • By bus is a good way to travel in Rome (although I only traveled this way twice, so I am not an expert), I liked it better than the metro. The main bus terminal is right in front of the main train station – Roma Termini. When I went with my friends we bought tickets that lasted for 75 minutes and cost us 1€. But just be sure that when you get on the bus that you validate your ticket. If it is not validated you make get a fine if it is checked.

Buses run from early in the morning until around midnight – but in some areas there are night buses as well. Check out the website below for more information on different types of tickets, and the different routes that the buses travel along.

Metro-Bus-Tram: How to plan the Rome trip.

  • The Best way to enjoy Rome is to pre plan every destination. 2 days prior to your trip plan every place you want to visit and then see the following website. In this website you have a route planner which shows you which bus you have to take from respective destinations. Just make a note of it and start your way.

And the most helpful tool for me was Google map. Big thanks for Google. Just enter the from and to address and it will help you find the route. If it is a walkable distance then go on and explore everything by walk, or see the nearest metro (in google earth) and it will help you too.

To avoid all the headaches of the tickets to all these metros and busses, just take a 4euro ticket. It is a day pass, specially for tourists, which will provide a complete free transport in all the metros, busses and trams(some lines are excluded, for more info see the same website).

    Metro-Bus-Tram: The metro

  • You have all heard the warnings about the metro in Rome, and they are true. There ARE pickpockets on the metro. I don't think you should let that discourage you from useing this form of public transportation, though. With a little pre-metro planning, you can safely navigate the underground system with ease.
Obviously the first thing you want to do is to secure your valuables. Do not do this inside the metro station, as you will be giving away the location of where your valuables are. If you have a camera with a neck stap, put it down the front of your shirt. If you have a small hand held camera, (and no purse) put the wrist stap around your arm and carry it in you hand. As far as purses go, put the strap over your head and shoulder and then hold the bag against you chest. . If you have a jacket, put your purse on first, then your jacket, zipping it if you can. (also putting the camera in your purse if you can).
As for men, put a rubber band around your waller, (if you carry one) and put it in your front pocket. We use the hidden waist pouch so we don't worry about that. If you don't have one of these, get one. You can find them on-line or in just about any store.
Once you get onto the metro, give your travel partner a hug. I stand facing whoever I am traveling with. This way all our valuables are sandwiched between us and we can watch over our shoulder for any sneeky fingers that might try something.
I have never had a problem on the metro (knock on wood) becouse of pre-planning.
One more thing, never accept unsolicited help. If someone approaches you and offers help, be leary. Don't let them get to close to you (and watch your valuables). Also, if a roman comes up to you and asks for help or directions, run the other way! This is a scam. They are trying to get close enough to steel your stuff. Don't let them invade your personal space. You would not let someone do it if you visited New York, so why let them do it in Rome.

Metro-Bus-Tram: Using the public transit system's website

  • Rome has a great public transportation system, which goes everywhere around town. However, it does this through its bus and tram system, as the two Metro lines only go to certain places.

Unfortunately, the ATAC website (the public transit system) is mostly in Italian, including the landing page. The following discussion will show English speakers how to use the website.

The Metro Lines A and B run from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., except on Saturday, when they run until 12:30 a.m. There is sometimes construction that forces riders to use the bus instead.

Normal buses run all day until midnight or so (I am not sure of the exact time), then they switch to night service, which means that many routes stop running but some routes still run with reduced service.

You can actually have the ATAC website (the public transit system) calculate your routing, if you want to test how long it takes to get from a proposed hotel address to the city center. Go to http://infopoint.atac.roma.it/bw.asp?lingua=eng . ***Note that this link has been recently updated, the older link is no longer valid***

Put your hotel's address at the depart from address (note that the street number goes in the separate box to the right of "No"), and put "Piazza Venezia" as the arrival at address (or any other address you'd like to try, like "Piazza San Pietro" for the Vatican, or "Piazza dei Cinquecento" for Termini. Then update the date and time. Actually, you can probably leave the date alone, but note that the time defaults to the current time in Rome, which may not be what you want. Then hit Calculate.

If you do this and compare day time versus night time (after midnight), you'll see the solution change as things shift to night service.

Note that this is one solution, but frequently not the only solution. But it will give you an idea of how long it will take to get places.

Tourbus: Beat the heat, save the feet

I know it's the lazy way to do it, and there are lots of places in Rome that these buses can't get near so you're still going to do quite a bit of walking, but for all that, we found the time we spent riding the hop on/hop off bus around the city was both enjoyable and worthwhile.

Tickets are valid for 24 hours - though the buses only run from 0900 until about 2100. We found that by catching our first bus after an early lunch one day, riding it until about 1800 in the evening and then picking up the first bus in the morning and using our ticket right up to the last minute of the 24 hours, we really felt we got better use out of it. The overnight break suited us very well.

There are several of these hop on/hop off buses operating in Rome. The one run by City Sightseeing (the biggest players in this game with operations in cities all over the world) has 2 routes that interconnect at set points with the one ticket valid for both routes. Disposable headphones are included and commentaries offered in several languages. We found this worked well - the commentary was fairly basic but quite broadranging and there were no problems with clarity.

The open top double-decker buses offer great view, though taking photos can be a bit hit and miss. You wouldn't want to sit downstairs however- we did this for a short time when a sudden rain shower hit and the view is very restricted. I could see this being a problem later into the season as the crowds build up.

You can start your tour at any one of the stops along the way. You'll be given your headphones - keep them with you as you hop off - and a card that gives you the times the buses will be at each of the stops along the different routes.

Check the website here for current prices, times, etc.

We used a company called Easy-Shuttle to get from Rome airport to our hotel, which was quite a drive outside the city (42 kilometers). The price was reasonable - EUR 55 for two - and the driver was waiting at the airport holding a sign with our name on it. Believe me, that can be reassuring when you step off the plane into a foreign country and you don't really know your way around.

Now, I like a bargain as much as the next person. and the idea of taking the airport bus or getting on the train to save a buck is always tempting, but you have to weigh the options. If your hotel is tucked away in some residential neighborhood or on the outskirts of Rome, you will probably need another bus/taxi/tram/subway to get where you are going. So do the math. The final tally may not be much higher.

A shuttle takes you straight to the door and saves you sore arms from dragging your luggage up and down flights of stairs, and across Rome's cobblestone streets. Better save your strength for later. You will need it. Don't believe the guidebooks that say Rome is small and easy to navigate. They are pulling your leg (and your leg muscles).

On the way back, we called the driver himself, Serafino, who speaks some English (speak slowly). He has his own fleet of cars. His number is 3479417380 or 3398965580. You can bargain with him (up to a point).

    Trains from central Rome to
    Fiumicino airport
    by Webboy
For all of you travelling to Rome by air, getting to and from Fiumicino airport (also known as the Leonardo Da Vinci Airport) is simple.

There is a train that travels direct (without stopping) to Termini Station, which is the connecting point for most trains, but also for both the Metro Lines - Line A and Line B.

If you are going from the centre out to the airport, you will find Termini on any Metro map.....it is very easy to find.

We used a taxi to get from the airport into rome, but used the train on the way home. It did seem a little expensive, but when you consider your other options i.e. Taxi, Bike or walk, i guess it's not to bad really.

A one way ticket from Termini to Fiumicino cost 9 Euros and 50 Cents each, a total of 19 Euros.

The trains are comfy enough, and the plus point is that you get to see the outskirts of Rome, which you might not otherwise have seen.

Ok, being that I was a backpacker, I used the public transport in every city I traveled. I can say, for sure, that Rome's Metro is not the worst (that belonged to Athens and its 30 stations under construction debacle). But, Rome is definitely second worst. It was the dirtiest, grungiest, over-crowded version of a subway I encountered. Plus, when I was there the first time (in the summer heat of Augusto), it was so hot that I lost millions of brain cells from the trip. OK, OK, it was probably the pub crawls, but it WAS hot!

They did get me where I wanted to go each and every time, which is the main thing, but the system could use an overhaul.
