    Metro-Bus-Tram: Metro
When in Rome, if you can get about using the Metro then do so. Its easy to understand, its quick and very cheap. The trains also seem to arrive on time and there are lots of them. Obviously they are busy in the rush hour, but that's to be expected. 4 or 5 Euros will get you to most places. Pick up a map at the station or ask your travel agent to get you one. Directions are good and easy to follow inside the stations.

    Metro-Bus-Tram: Metro
You can buy an all day pass for 4 euros per person. We used this quit a bit and it was clean on time and really nice when you are tired from walking around all day. If you walk all the to the end of the platform it is a lot less crowded (as certain times of the days people are packed in like sardines). For some reason everyone tries to get in the center of the cart and end up squishing together? But we were never uncomfortable or huddled together like penguins because we walked to the end of the platform and boarded there.

  • we used the metro several times when we just wanted to get from A to B.

€1 for a single journey up to 75 minutes. By comparison with somewhere like London, price is just sooo low

trains not as frequent as in other cities, and there are only 2 lines, but still very useful

Metro-Bus-Tram: Rome's metro system is limited...
Rome's metro system is limited to two lines. Both of them make London's underground look like first class on an aeroplane! It can be a bit seedy in Rome's 'tube', but you'll cope.
Buses pick up where the metro doesn't, but the bus drivers have to be the rudest in Europe and the method of payment is confusing to say the least. You have to buy your tickets in advance (get a combined metro-bus one if you're planning on doing much bus/metro travel in one day) and the best place to get those is in the metro stations. There are machines in the buses where you are meant to click your ticket, but they seldom work. Don't try talking to the surly bus drivers... they'll just ignore you. I got a couple of free trips because the machine was clapped out and the driver didn't care!
The combined tickets are a rip off if you don't use them right. If you are just going to bus into and out of the city centre, one trip tickets are probably a better idea.

    Metro-Bus-Tram: Transportation strikes
We spent 2 weeks in Rome in May 2005 and had to deal with 2 strikes, both on Fridays. The first one was a national train strike which forced us to book an expensive one-way car rental to Florence. We had non-refundable tickets to the Uffizi that weekend and couldn't use our pre-paid Eurail train pass. The 2nd strike involved the Rome metro, which we knew about so managed to work around it. We were told that the metro union has not had a contract since 2001 so they strike all the time--mostly on Fridays. In spite of the strikes, we still had a good time in Rome.

    Metro-Bus-Tram: Tram
Take the tram 3 from metrostation Ottaviano San Pietro and make a ride through the northern part of the city. It's the most relax way to visit the parts of the city outside of the citycentre. You'll pass along some modern shopping- and officebuildings and interesting old monumental buildings.

    Metro-Bus-Tram: Subways in rome
Ride the subways in Rome for the experience and see the 70's style graffiti on most trains:) The subways are even more packed than the ones in New York City during rush hour if that is even possible.

    Metro-Bus-Tram: Metro
The Rome metro contains a modern system of transport. It's a bit like the underground stations in Antwerp; old fashioned floors with a circle relief on it..

The carriages itself have flatscreens which show short advertisementmovies. You don't have to bore yourself during the trip.

    Metro-Bus-Tram: Validate your tickets!
Don't forget to validate your train ticket before you get on the train, otherwise you could end up with a fine. Luckily we were let off by a nice ticket inspector. The validation points are yellow coloured and should be near where you purchase your ticket. They can also be found at the fast ticket machines
