Beggars and Cons: The gypsies and pick pockets...

  • The gypsies and pick pockets are working hard, even in the winter. My husband caught a little girl going for his pocket the first night we were in Rome, near the train station. We talked to a woman who had her wallet stolen by a teenage girl on the bus. She spent the whole nxt day running around trying to replace things. Be smart, carry all of your valuables (passport, plane tickets) in a money belt under your clothes. Assume you are being watched because you probably are. But don't let it spoil your fun.

    First and foremost... watch out for the gypsy mothers and their kids!

    Never leave anything sitting behind you or unattended EVER! Use a fanny pack and do not remove it.

    Be smart and DO NOT flash cash.

    If the street does not look safe then DO NOT go there...Simple

  • Watch OUT for the Gypsies at train staion and on the buses (expeciall the famous 64), they'll be in your pockets before you knew what happened, And Dont Be afraid to push them or thier small kids away.....But the main thing is dont look like a target..Cause if you look like easy prew they''ll gecha....But you Knew that RIGHT?

    Unlicensed taxi drivers are utterly impervious to decency, honesty or value for money! Don't ever, ever use one, or kiss your budget goodbye! Luckily, most sites are easily walkable from a central hotel, so apart from arriving and departing you hopefully won't need one. If you need a taxi to take you to the airport, ask your hotel to help. At least you can agree the price up front, and budget accordingly.

  • Please be careful of gypsy women with really tiny babies on Bus 64 who are big time pros at pickpocketing

  • Gypsy thieve, non-gypsy thieves, and other nasties that prey on tourists. There are lots of tourist police out there, not for nothing. Keep the good stuff safely stashed away, and don't be so blinded by all of the sights that you forget where your purse or camera is. These guys do this for a living, so watch it!

  • Being ripped off by street traders is quite possible. Always ask the price before you buy. Being pickpocketed near any tourist destination - i.e everywhere. Don't take taxis if you can avoid.

    Male tourists walking around in the northern part of the city should be careful of men approaching you and begging/cajoling you to visit their 'nice, American, piano bar/disco.' In truth, these men are drawing you in to prostitute establishments. My brother and I found this out the hard way! They promise you a fun, dance-bar setting, with lots of Americans. When you get in, its about a dozen beautiful women sitting around, waiting for unsuspecting tourists. The girls will sit by you, and you think, 'my God, what great luck!' Then they ask you to buy them a few drinks. The drinks cost $20 per drink though! After a little conversing, you realize these women want hundreds of dollars to accompany you to your hotel! Its hard to get out of there before dropping $40 or so! Every night my brother and I walked to or from our hotel in this area, we were swarmed by these men who's job it is to draw-in tourists. Just tell them 'naw, I ain't into whores.' They'll protest innocense, but just ignore them, and keep walking---unless you DO want a gorgeous girl for the night. The girls told us that the police allow prostitution.

    The Piazza di Spagna and the Spanish Steps are beautiful, but be especially aware of the pickpockets and scuzzy con artists in this area.

  • Wherever I turned, it seemed that someone was demanding a big tip from me. Especially by the Colloseum, where men dressed as Gladiators accost tourists and get their pictures taken with them. They then demand you to give them money, although they won't say this before you take the picture. My friend tried to give one of these rip off artists a few lire and he insulted her.
