Warning: ignore warnings from other VTs about Roman traffic! In fact, I feel safer driving in Rome than I do in Dallas, Texas. Why? Because Italians pay much more attention to their driving than we do in the States. Yes, it appears crazy, but that's because the Italian drivers are following a different set of rules than those posted on the street signs. Once you learn the rules, it's actually fun to drive there!
How do you learn the rules? Read 'The Italians' by Luigi Barzini, who loves and criticizes his countrymen at the same time. For example, you'll learn that 'passing' someone in a car is 'sorpassare' in Italian. But 'sorpassare' also means 'to surpass', physically, morally, ethically, and sexually. So, as Barzini says, it doesn't matter how fast you get somewhere, what's important is how many people you pass on the way ;-).

Vespas, scooters, little motorcyles, whatever you want to call them. Watch out! They are everywhere. Actually they didn't move so fast in central Rome because there are simply too many people and other obstacles for these guys to travel too fast. It's the noise that these things make that will cause you to go mad! If you want, you can rent them also.

being a pedestrian-tourist-thing in rome is quite nerve-wrecking. you really need to take that leap of faith to cross the road. mind you, i'm not talking about jay-walking...i mean the zebra-crossing. almost motorist thinks he's michael schumacher in a ferrari and will *only* stop when you *start* crossing...and the ferrari is only about a feet away from you.

THE TRAFFIC!!! Being from NYC, I thought I know what traffic was! Street lights there were few and far between. Apparently, pedestrians take the initiative and start walking in the crosswalk and the cars and scooters stop. You have to do this, otherwise you'll be standing on the curb forever!

Although we were warned about pick-pocketing, we never saw any of this and we were walking all over the city all day long. I don't know if instances are exagerated or real. I would still watch out.
What was more of a danger was crossing streets. There is a lot of traffic and you really have to have nerve to cross it if this is not something you are used to. Watch out for those motorbikes, they'll drive up on the sidewalks if they need to get around traffic.

Rome is cleaner and safer than ever. They cleaned a lot of monuments, there are no gipsies or pick pockets in the streets. But, be careful with cars. They do not respect red lights, and pay a lot of attention when crossing the streets. Sometimes, you even have to fight to make them stop so you can cross on YOUR green light! Make a lot of noise, it's an italian thing!

Drinving in Rome is something crazy, if you can drive in Rome, you can drive anywhere in the world, so take a bus, but when you do it, WATCH YOUR BELONGS, there are so many pickpockets on the buses and crowded areas you won't believe.

Watch out for the countless scooters that zip by. There are fewer traffic lights, so one must be careful of all traffic, especially while crossing busy streets.

Mopeds are EVERYWHERE in Rome. Watch out for them, even when down the quietest of streets because they come zooming around and assume right of way.
