The museum actually fronts the main road from Sperlonga to Gaeta and it houses an interesting display of artifacts and statues etc., that were discovered in Tiberius's Cave. If you go down the side of the museum and head towards the water you come to Tiberius's villa which in its day must have been magnificent. I don't know much about these ruins, I just get drawn to them. I imagine how the people lived there, then. So you can see the Sperlonga township quite easily from the villa and The Treglia monument (whatever it is) is also visible. Going past all of the rooms you can see a series of pools that extend from right next to the villa and finish close to the ocean beach. On the left is Tiberius's cave..........a pool goes right inside the cave and its full of fish. (see Lazio travelogue).

  • Every little side street in Sperlonga township have their own character. It is like walking into another township when you turn down yet another side street.

Visit the WWF Reserve - Blue Oasis
Near to the Grotta di Tiberio there is a Nature Reserve called the Blu Oasis.
Here the marine waters are so clean that Poseidon seaweed grows freely.
These waters have been awarded the European Blue Flag award for cleanliness for several years now.

The infamous highway, the Via Appia , is a testament to the remarkable organisational and engineering ability of the Romans. Construction of this, the first and most famous of the ancient Roman roads, was commenced in 312 AD by the Appius Claudius Caecus. It was called the "Queen of Roads" (Regina Viarum) and was to be the main means of communication between Rome to the south, to Capua, and was later extended down to Brindisi, with a total length of more than 563 km (350 miles).

Just outside Itri (4.5 km towards Fondi) original sections of this road have been unearthed to create a walkway through the mountains. It was paved with smoothly fitting blocks of hard wearing lava.

More Roman remains can be found in Fondi, Formia and Minturno.
