Sperlonga Villa........a mile of tiles. by unravelau Covers quite an expanse between the highway and the mediterranean, below the museum. I don't know very much about the purposes of the rooms, whether they are relaxing areas, sleeping, kitchens or bathrooms but unique in these ancient communities are the myriad of tiled floors. Just had a chat with another interested person about this aspect of the ancient Roman culture and we both marvelled at the patience they demonstrated laying tiny tiles individually to eventually (sometimes) make a whole design on a floor. From the wall of Sperlonga Museum. © C Roach 2001 by unravelau The museum at Sperlonga, houses most of the statues and artifacts discovered in the neighbouring cave of Tiberius. Some pretty interesting bits and pieces are to be found here and when I was there, they were running a video on the discovery and recovery of some of these pieces. If I understood correctly the people of the area banded together to keep the artifacts in the area and this saw the development of the museum. Leave a Comment

Sperlonga is beach, beach and more beach. This is a resort for serious sun worshippers. Beautiful golden sands and gentle tides make Sperlonga the ideal resort for just chilling out. At one end of the beach there are mild natural hot springs that bubble up through the sand and the town above seems more Arabic than Italian.

Sperlonga is a beautiful little town built on a cliff face overlooking the Meditteranean. The whole town is whitewashed with narrow alleyways that climb and fall the cliffface. Its like being in North Africa. Amongst the tiny houses are lots of great little restaurants.

Grotta di Tiberio © NonnaLou by NonnaLou Do take the time to visit the "Grotta di Tiberio" and Sperlonga's Archaeological Museum, "Il Museo Archeologico Nazionale", located on the Via Flacca. In the grotto were found fragments of huge sculptures which once adorned the man-made fishponds at the cave mouth. These marble statues, dating from the 2nd century BC, depicted scenes from Homer's "Adventures of Odysseus". Some of these mythological works of art have been painstakingly reconstructed. Usually open from 9am until an hour before sunset. Leave a Comment

The museum of Sperlonga is a dedication to the trials of Oddyseus. Housed in what was a villa built for the Emperor Tiberius, there are sculptures found in the Villa and the nearby grotto.
