Split Mountain, or Montagne Spaccata as it is known to the locals and the neighbouring Grotta del Turco are sights to behold. Legend has it that at the time of the crucifiction the mountain split in two. Half way down this staircase is the mark of a hand, said to be that of a Turkish sailor who didn't believe the event. At another spot shows an indent, said to be the bed of S. Filippo Neri. Lower still you can find the Crucifix Chapel which is said to date around the end of the X1Vth century.Split mountain was a little slippery that day so with my history of bone breaking I decided against the grotto walk, but my companion said it was beautiful..................I decided it was a must do next trip.Click on picture to see extent of composite pic
