To me the beach was a little bit disappointing. The water was too cold for the time of the year and the beach looked a little bit dirty. Maybe this was because of the dark sand and the time of the year, as the beach was not cleaned frequently. I'm sure that it is very clean during high season. The public part of the beach was quite small too. It seems that part of the Chiavari beach is privately owned by hotels.

Carruggiu

In the centre of Chiavari you can find a carruggiu. This is a narrow long alley with porticoes (a covered walkway supported by regularly spaced columns). In Medieval times the fishing and commercial activities were carried out here when the sea reached into this area of town. Nowadays you will find all kinds of shops and eateries under the covered walkway. It's nice to walk here when you are coming from the seafront and heading for the historical centre.

Piazza Matteotti

At the end of the Corso Garibaldi lies this lovely square "Piazza Matteotti". In the middle you will find a statue of Garibaldi. Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-82) was the most famous hero of Italy. You will find his statue or name on many squares and streets around Italy. He was an Italian patriot and soldier who contributed to the achievement of Italian unification under the royal House of Savoy.

On the right side lies the Chiesa di San Francesco and in the back you can see the public garden "Parco Villa Rocca".

I had the impression that Chiavari is a good place for those who sail. There is a small yacht harbour which makes the seafront a lively place.

Boardwalk

Chiavari has a lovely broad boardwalk, going from the yacht harbour to the other side of town. It is lined with trees and has benches.

Along the boardwalk

At the end of the boardwalk, you will find a nice fountain, a great spot for relaxing and watching the sun going down behind the mountains.

Chiavari at the Ligurian Coast

C H I A V A R I is a medium-sized coastal town at the Ligurian coast, halfway between Cinque Terre and Genoa. I would have never known this place if it wasn't for VT and my VT friend Chiara (Pollon).
