Beer and wine bottles in Corniglia

Strolling along the Via Fieschi through the centre of Corniglia we were slightly taken aback to come across this unusual display of beer and wine for sale in one of the small shops that line the street. Look closely at the labels. Each features a famous person from history, religion, even music. But what a bizarre mix of characters! On one side (photo 2) there were mostly feared dictators, Hitler and Mussolini, but tucked among them too is Che Guevara. And on the other side (photo 1) we found Che and Mussolini again, but also Ho Chi Minh, Gandhi, Mao Tse-tung, Karl Marx, Pope John Paul II and Bob Marley. It wasn’t clear just why such an eclectic mix of characters should feature on beer and wine sold in this little Italian village, but certainly it is not because these people have any connections here!

It really is worth the experience to order food in the correct Italian sequence. Enjoy the leisureliness of an Italian meal. Don't try to force it into you idea of how a meal should be!

Be wild and crazy, let the cameriere suggest your cibi e vino!

the monorail

The hills of the Cinque Terre are covered with grape vines, baking in the Ligurian sunshine and waiting to be harvested each autumn and made into the delicious wine that we love to drink on our visits there.

Due to the precarious way that the grapes are grown - on steep cliffs, an ingenious Monorail network has been built to carry the grapes once picked.

It is big enough to carry the driver and containers of precious cargo (aka grapes).

So after a long day hiking past the vineyards, whilst you are sipping a chilled glass of vino bianco, look to the hills and amaze over the ingenious Monorail!

Corniglia is the only place where we saw this but these rather strangely labeled beer and wine bottles were on prominent display along the main street in town - interesting but also a bit disturbing.

Here's another pic of the monorail train used by the locals to gather in the harvest from the steep terraces. You have to be crazy to ride on it!!
