The Aquarium... a maze with a lot of fish
The aquarium in Genoa is one of the largest aquariums in Europe. My first impression of the aquarium wasn’t exactly what you call good though. When you enter the aquarium the first thing that happens is that a mascot jumps next to you and tells you to smile for a picture… arghhh! I totally dislike things like that, and yep, unusual for me, I refused to smile! (no need to say that I didn’t buy the picture either). But I have to admit that the aquarium itself has some great displays, so a must see for people that love aquariums.
Maybe I have a weird impression of the aquarium, hahaha, but to me it felt like being in a maze, with the fish tanks on either side as decoration. Hahaha, I got totally lost here, or better said, confused of where I was in the aquarium. They lead you through the aquarium in such a confusing way! My sense of direction is already very bad, and going criss-cross through the aquarium didn't make it any better :-)
There are some great displays though, and the aquarium is really huge. So you really need quite a bit of time to see it all. I didn't count on this, so I almost went running through the aquarium (I didn't have that much time), with some stops on the way to enjoy and look at all the exotic fish. The aquarium has 59 tanks containing hundreds of different species from across the globe.
The aquarium is open a lot, so it's not that difficult to plan it in your time schedule while visiting Genoa. The hours are rather confusing as they differ which day of the week it is and also which months. You can find a good overview of the opening times on the official website of the aquarium : Opening times
The entrance fee is 12.50 euro per person. When I visited in October 2003 it was so very quiet, no line-ups and no waiting time to get inside. But by looking at the queuing system in front of the aquarium I suspect that it can get very busy here. So when you plan to go during the high season this might be something to take into consideration.

3D movie at the aquarium
Besides the dolphins, sharks and the many different types of fish, you can also watch a 3D movie at the Aquarium. The entrance to the movie is included into the price of your ticket. When I was here they showed a 3D movie called 'Krakken'. I was hoping on a 3D movie with actual pictures of tropical fish in the ocean. But I got very much disappointed. 'Krakken' is a animation which tries to give you an idea what life under the sea be like in 10 million years. The special effects in the movie are good, but the story didn't excite me at all. It felt like it was a children's movie and if I had known this before I wouldn't have gone to watch it. Be aware though, it's not suitable for too young children either! One little kid was crying because the scenes of a big ugly fish going after the cute little 'krakken' was too scary for her.
In the picture you can see a dolphin playfully swimming around. Hahaha, it's hard to take a picture of them though! They are really fast! But here is slowed down a little bit to pose for a picture :-)
on deck of the pirate-ship
Favorite thing: You may walk freely over the decks and feel like an old sailor...
...but you may easily realize, this is just an artificial ship that has not a lot of the features you might need, when sailing on the open sea !
Fondest memory: The pirate-ship is also a nice place for a view on the port and the old houses built on the port.
A few years ago this " highway on feet " was simply put in front of their houses and it is one of the most frequented streets in Genua today.
