Genoa Public Transport
There are several funiculars (and lifts) in Genoa. The only one I have used is the one from Largo Zecca ( near Via Garibaldi with all the beautiful villas) up to Righi.
It takes about 20 minutes, is a thrill in itself, and up top there is a fabulous view, at least one cafe, and a castle that is apparently worth the ten minute walk.
It is part of the city transport system so just use your bus ticket that you can buy at a newsagent. Or there is a machine in the foyer.
I was staying with someone in Madonetta half way up and I didn't realise that you have to press the button on the platform to ask for it to stop if you are at an intermediate station.
Well, one day, the inevitable happened. There was a soccer match on and everyone was at home watching it. I was the only one on the platform. I could hear the sudden roars emenating up from the city as Italy either got a goal or didn't get a goal. I could hear the funicular coming flat strap. And around the corner it came with the driver and the conductor in the cab glued to a transistor radio, and the game. When they saw me they waved their hands in alarm but could not stop and I slowly realised what I had done wrong. There was the button on the pole I should have pushed.
Next time I go to Genoa I will seek out all the other ways of going up and down. My home town of Wellington, NZ, has a cable car and I still feel the childish thrill of being hauled up a hill on a rope.
I have heard the lifts are spectacular too.

Genoa has three funicular railways that one up the steep slopes that encircle the city. The first is the Sant'Anna which runs from Piazza Portello - Corso Magenta covering a length of 357m. It costs € 1,00 per journey. The second is the Zecca-Righi which runs from Largo della Zecca to the different quarters located all along the slope of the Righi hill passing through a few stations on the way. Again it costs € 1,00. The third is actually a rack railway and runs from Piazza del Principe to Granarolo.
