Portovenere is a medieval sea village at the gateway to the Cinque Terre . This enchanting and naturally beautiful town dates back to the Roman era. The lovely view admired from the Church of San Pietro located at the edge of the cliff, inspired famous poets such as Shelley and Byron and from whom took the name Golfo dei Poeti (The Poets' Gulf).

Portovenere. You may notice...
Favorite thing: Portovenere. You may notice how close together the houses are and how narrow the streets are in Portovenere. This town was built to withstand harsh pirate attacks. The houses are close together to form a wall along the shore and the streets are narrow so they could be quickly bolted shut.If there was a serious threat of attack, the cliffs would be smeared with tallow, so the enemy , would slip and then the women would poor boiling oil over the pirate's heads! OUCH!
La spezia is strange... nice...
Favorite thing: La spezia is strange... nice place to take a ferry to corse or sardinia, known by most of italians who did their military service in the navy... and close to some fantastic place like 5 terre, portovenere and lerici.
Fondest memory: when they refused me to the (compulsory) military service!!!!
