Helpfulness
The nice thing about La Spezia is that since its a locals town there are many different markets to shop at that offer food at local prices. If your on a budget you will save a lot of Euro by shopping at these markets as opposed to eating out at some of the more expensive cafe's.

The best way to get to know La Spezia is by exploring its marketplace, or business district. Located on a pedestrian only cobblestone path about 10 minutes from the train station, this part of La Spezia is simply brimming with life. There are two open plaza's connecting the long stretch of cobble stone and there are shops on either side. This is where the people of La Spezia come to meet and greet. There are many different shops to explore and many different cafe's to tempt your taste buds. The heart and soul of La Spezia resides in this part of town.

The streets of this city are long and full of activity. There a fresh vibrant feel to the streets that in part comes from the fact that the streets are full of locals as opposed to tourists. The shops and cafe's are unabashedly Italian and don't cater to the tourists. Walking these streets will give you a true taste of Italy!

The Gulf is stunning and must have been even better when the town was a simple fishing village.
Visitors not wanting to stay in La Spezia could try anyone of Porto Venere, Lerici-Fiascherino, Le Grazie, Tellaro or Villa Marigola. All have kept their original aspect and if you are looking for 'quaint', these are for you.

The hills surrounding the town provide magnificients walks, and the characteristic hamlets of Biassa and Campiglia are well worth a visit for their enchanting views enveloped in silence. The village of Marinasco boasts an historical parish church reconstructed in the 18th century.

La Spezia has developed since the building of the naval dockyard (1860-65) conceived by Cavour and planned by Domenico Chiodo.
It is pleasant not only for its position in the centre of the Gulf, but also for its panoramic beauty and very mild climate.

I'd highly recommend everybody a visit to the castle. Even though you may not be interested in castles and museums, I'm sure the breathtaking views you may enjoy from there will strike you.
As the castle is situated on an upper hill, you may enjoy fabulous views over the city and the sea, mainly if visiting at the end of the afternoon when the sun provides a golden shade to buildings and sky.
Also, to go up the castle, we went through some quiet residential neighbourhoods, where we could observe some nice Italian villas.

When visiting La Spezia take a quiet stroll along the coastal walk. It is a long path bordering the sea and the port with some small shades provided by the growing palm trees. There are some benches along the way to sit down for a while and enjoy the place.
Also, by the end of the afternoon some street vendors gather along the way and spread their "products" on the ground: Louis Vuitton (imitation) bags, designer's (imitation) sunglasses and some binoculars. African handmade product goods may also be found there.
Apart from enjoying the walking, we sat at one of the open doors cafes for a late afternoon drink. Other people at the tables were locals enjoying some snacks and a drink before dinner.
