    Port

As I mentioned previously, there are lots of boats arriving and departing from La Spezia. There is a wide choice concerning departures/arrivals to destinations situated on the Golfo dei Poeti, such as Portovenere and Cinque Terre.

Also, it is possible to get a boat to/from Corsica, not to mention arriving in La Spezia with your own yacht or sailing boat, since the city has a beautiful marina.

    By the port

We arrived in La Spezia by car, driving on the highway from Genova. The exit to La Spezia is well signalized, so no chance of loosing your exit.

When in La Spezia, we parked our car by the port. As with most Italian villages, parking is paid on a park meter. So prepare some change before arriving in La Spezia!

To visit La Spezia the best option is to walk around.

getting to Pisa on way to Florence

I just went recently from La Spezia to Florence and bought the one regional ticket which allows to complete the trip in 6 hours, I put my luggage into the baggage depot (3 euro) whicch is at the end of the platform and walked out of station, info office is staioght ahead and just around the corner to left at end of block . grab a map the you can walk quickly to see the tower and other buildings and walk back, allow a little time to get baggage back out. You check your train times on trenitalia. I didn't have time to spare but this worked well and I got photos , I didn't really care to climb the tower or line up with hordes of tourists to go into the ohter buildings

    The Train Station

From this train station you can catch trains to Rome and Florence, and other parts of Italy as well, but what makes this particular station important is that this is where you catch the commuter train that runs from La Spezia to Levanto, with the five villages of Cinque Terre in between. In other words its your meal ticket to visiting the Cinque Terre region.

By train from La Spezia to Cinque Terre

    Cinque Terre

If you want to go from La Spezia to Cinque Terre, I recommend to go by train. I went in March but it was Easter time and there was lots of people... too many, I would say. But train is definitely the best way to go to Cinque Terre. Get off in Riomaggiore and walk along the beautiful coast. That's the best way to appreciate this wonderful place!

The best way to travel between towns is by train and if you're staying in the area for awhile I would highly recommend the Cinque Terre Card. It gives you unlimited rides on the trains. The pricing is tiered by the time frame your staying but it is quite affordable if your checking out each of the towns (the price includes the pass to hike between towns).
The town are small enough that the best way to travel is by foot. If you're up for it you can get between the towns with a short but vigorous hike. The views are beautiful and its a great way to work off that great Italian food.

Many of the trains along the Genoa-La Spezia route stop in Cinque Terra...somtimes just the largest town of Manarola. Check the train schedule carefully.
Trains that stop at all 5 towns in Cinque Terra usually run every hour. Pick up a schedule at a Tourist Office in one of the Cinque Terra train stations.

It's also possible to walk from town to town along the scenic trail or the highway...
