One morning we went to buy our Cinque Terre day tickets, which cost ý10.80 for the two of us. I gave the man at the station a ý20 note and he gave me ý4.20 change in coins. I was waiting for the ý5 note ( I saw him take it out of the till) but he seemed to be finished with me and anxious to get to the next customer. GF stepped in at that stage and asked how much the tickets were (we already knew but GF was trying to make his point). The main knew he had been caught and took another note from the till and gave it to us. GF told me afterwards that he had watched the man 'palm' the note under his elbow. The man thought we hadn't seen it and was hoping for a nice big tip.
We noticed this particular man was not wearing the Trenitalia uniform, although he was behind the ticket counter and selling tickets. The staff who served us who were wearing the official uniform were not only very pleasant, but extremely helpful. This was just the one bad apple in the bunch.
