Favorite thing: The most expensive villas are of course the ones on higher up the hills, high on top of the former fishing village of Portofino.
From San Giorgio and the castle you will have a great overview on these villas with great parks around them.

Favorite thing: Its funny to see these signs all over Italy and even more funny to see, that the law was given already in 1979 while it was really executed just recently
Castle Brown is seen in the background, and you also see the huge pinetree, that was planted around 1875 on the terrace , when Mr. Brown bought the castle.

Favorite thing: Most of the old and colorful fishermen-houses were split into appartments for rich people and sold for high prices.
And the new owners of these appartments will mostly just spend a few weeks in Portofino each year.
Fondest memory: On the total Portofino has just around 500 inhabitants nowadays.

Favorite thing: The very end of the boulevard along the sea in Portofino is getting rather small , and there is absolutely NO fence towards the sea, so watch your steps and watch your children.
It was hard for me to believe that such a place where thousands of tourists are walking through would not be fenced in .

Favorite thing: In the 1950s and 1960s the international Jet Set found an exclusive and remote place in Portofino. During my visit there was an exhibition of old black&white pics of Hollywood celibrities beeing on holiday in Portofino.
Well, most of them left and were searching for different places lateron
...BUT the high prizes STAYED in Portofino!!!

Favorite thing: Portofino was already a village in the times of the roman empire, as it was a great strategic place and a great and safe port - hidden for enemies and easy to watch out for dangerous ships approaching.
Fondest memory: Plinius maior / Plinius the elder was the founder of the village and he called it "Portus Delphini" almost 2000 years ago. So this is where the name Portofino comes from. The village has nowadays just about 500 inhabitants.

Favorite thing: What a lovely place - especially out of season !
This cat was searching for tourists and obviously was interested to be in my pics, as I saw it down in the port and then again, half an hour later ,up the hill in front of church of San Giorgio .
Fondest memory: In my 2nd picture you will see that same cat again, sitting on the terrace of San Gorgio, that is quite a distance from the place where i have taken the 1st picture of that cat.

Favorite thing: The old castle had great strategic importance since times of the roman empire, as from there the whole bay of La Spezia + the Ligurian Coast could be seen and approaching enemies had no chance to land on the coast undetected.
Fondest memory: And nowadays you as a tourist will be able to visit this nice castle and enjoy the great view over the bay !

Favorite thing: Portofino is one of the most expensive places you may go as a tourist in Italy, especially when you go to a hotel or a restaurant.
GO there ANYWAY !!
Look at this lovely bay, seen from the castle and eat somewhere else and search for a hotel somewhere closeby along the Ligurian coast, where the prices are much more reasonable.
Fondest memory: Portofino is certainly a great place for a daytrip in Liguria !

Favorite thing: La Piazzetta is a small square with various colorful buildings overlooking the harbour. Here you can see some restaurants, cafes and shops.
There are some tromp l' oeil decorated houses surrounding this square.
