    Festa

by sunchasers Written Aug 20, 2007

Doing the summer, there are countless festivals in Italy. So many, in fact, it's very difficult to keep up with what's going on in any given town. We found out that Portovenere has the festa delle bianca madonna on August 17th. This is a religious tribute that the local residents partake in. This one is particularly nice because the entire town is covered in lights.

    Locals stop and chat

by kathymof Written Aug 9, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We stopped in a little cafe to get a drink and they had a TV on that was showing sailing races where Italy was doing quite well. It was very interesting as the locals all seemed to know that there was a TV here that would be showing the races. They would stop in to just stand there and look at the TV or chat up Italy's standing with others doing the same thing. Some would order a coffee.

    ascensore nooo! grazie

Ligurian towns, in particular small and typical ones like this, are famous for their "up and down"s but would you prefer a more comfortable lift or more tiring climbing up and down in a lovely landscape among small streets...? and citizens seem to prefer the 2nd possibility: the town is full of banners saying: "lift nooo! thanks" and "hands off the historic centre!"...

    SHOUTING WOMAN :-)))

    .
Don't be surprised when you hear locals speaking (or rather crying) very loudly on the streets - Italian language sounds quite pleasant in my opinion (like singing, I could say :-). And it's paradise for

The buildings on the hill were built very close one to each other. I see they didn't much place to build them.

    DRYING BED-CLOTHES

    .
Italians living in Portovenere (and not only there) used to dry their bed-clothes and clothes at all... on the street - you can find there... all kind of clothes hehe :-)

    HOUSES AND THEIR COLOURS

    .
Pay attention to specific colours of the old houses - pastele colours of red, pink and yellow mainly. Don't they look great?
Why did they use to paint all houses in these colours?
