    From La Spezia to Portovenere

    by magor65 Written Jan 25, 2012

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The best way to get to Portovenere from La Spezia is by ferry. As far as I know this service is available from spring to autumn. It's not a problem to buy a ticket in the harbour before the departure. The journey takes about half an hour and the ticket costs 4 Euro single and 7 Euro return ( July 2011).
You can also travel to the Island of Palmaria which lies close to Portovenere. Nowadays it's a natural reserve and there are also some nice little beaches there.

It's possible to take a bus from La Spezia to Portovenere, which might be sometimes a good choice, but on a hot sunny day I think a boat is much nicer.

Cinque Terre excursion boat come here

by kathymof Written Aug 9, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

You can catch the excursion boat from the Cinque Terre villages, and for an added fee, take it all the way to Portovenere. This is acutally a very nice way to arrive in town as it has a beautiful harbor and you get to pass some old defensive walls on the way in. It docks very near old town.

    Boats

Portovenere has boat connections with other locations within Golfo dei Poeti – LaSpezia, for instance – not to mention the Cinque Terre villages.

Prices and timetables of boats depend on destination. We departed from Portovenere to our visit to Cinque Terre and boat works as a hop an off during the day. Prices for a daily ticket are 18euros/adult (July 2004).

Portovenere has a little marina, so if you are travelling by boat or yacht Portovenere is for sure a nice port to stop and enjoy the village.

    Park by the beach

We arrived in Portovenere driving from LaSpezia. Access is good and along the way you get some scenic views over Portovenere and the ocean.

As traffic is restricted within Portovenere, you must park your car in one of the surrounding parking zones. The closer you get to Portovenere the more expensive the parking is – the more distant areas cost about 1euro/hour (July 2004) and the closer areas cost 1.5 euros/ hour (July 2004).

    Getting around Portovenere

    Our faithful little Peugeot

Once you've got your accommodation in Portovenere, park your car (either in the main street, the underground carpark next to the entrance of the harbour, or the open-air carpark in the Poet's Gulf (which was situated in front of our hotel - see Accommodation Tip).

The only way you can explore the harbour, alleyways and churches / castle is to walk.

Portovenere is so small anyway, that you can get from "A" to "B" in no time at all. I do suggest however, that you try to take detours into the smaller alleyways, and you will feel like you're experiencing the TRUE Italy.

As with many historical towns all over Europe, cars are not allowed in the town centre, and so is the case here also.

parking in Portovenere is really expensive: 1,50 euro per hour but if you decide to sail, for the guests of the harbour there is an agreement according to which you pay 10 euros the whole day... not cheap at all :-( but count 1,5 x 24 hours what would be...

You can hire a boat in Portovenere and go around or to the nearby islands of Isola Palmaria with Grotta Azzura (cave). I didn't do it only because of my very short budget that time :-(((.
