The ferries are an inexpensive way to travel in the area. Ask for the times right on the dock, the printed brochure is not always accurate. You can go to the Cinqueterre, Portofino, San Fruttuoso, Camogli, Genoa or whale watching.
In summer time one can catch the ferry from Genoa to Santa Margherita. (april-sept)

Trains are available to Santa Margherita and are reasonably priced for those who decide not to hire a car. Trains are available from Pisa Airport and from Genoa train station.
The train station is located within the Pisa airport, which run frequently to Santa Margherita.
From Genoa Airport you can take a taxi or the airport bus to Genoa' s train station.
Santa Margherita train station is central, and provides good connections with the rest of Italy. On the main railway line between Pisa and Genoa, access is easy from Rome and other big cities.
You may need to change to a 'stopping' train at a nearby station such as Chiavari.
Ferries leave Santa Margherita to Portofino regulary and daily, it takes approx 15 minutes and its a fabulous way to see the coastline of the Italian Riverina.
We also take the ferry to Portofino and take the bus or walk back. You get to see the best of both worlds.
There are three airports which are close to Santa Magherita.
The Genoa Airport and the Pisa Airport being the closest. For international flights the closest is Milan. Its approx 2hrs drive from Milan to Santa Margherita.
Cars can be hired from Milan, Pisa or Genoa airports. The car companies are Avis, Budget, Thrifty and Europcar. Its approx a 2hour drive from Milan Airport to Santa Margherita.
The best way to get to Santa Margherita is to take the A12 motorway/autostrada . Exit at Rapallo and follow the sign posts to Santa Margherita. We always use this webpage for proper directions. Print out your directions before leaving home .
Parking can be extremely difficult around Santa Margherita, so if you are not staying at a hotel with private parking then you will have to pay a fee daily to park your car.
The fee is not cheap but however you can pay for a 24 hour fee.
